The Erasmus+ programme continues to be the main driver of the Coventry University [CU] outward mobility strategy.
CU has engaged in substantial strategic and infrastructural changes fully to become a Global Enterprising University in which ALL students are given the opportunity to benefit from an International Experience & learn a new language or enhance existing language skills. This approach is unheard-of not only for CU but also more widely in the UK HEI sector.
The International Experience and Mobility Service [IEMS] was created in 2009 to initiate, catalyse and/or coordinate such changes. Later renamed the Centre for Global Engagement [CGE], it has in recent years increased exponentially participation in Erasmus & has become the main pillar of CU's internationalisation policy, developing a 'Catalogue of Mobility Opportunities' for students to study, work or volunteer abroad. CGE works closely with academic departments & other professional services at CU ultimately to ensure that all students are aware of the benefits of undertaking a study or work placement abroad, supporting them through their mobility journey and working particularly with those departments that have traditionally not engaged with mobility activity. As such, Erasmus mobility has increased by over 1000% in the last 5 years and the programme has been instrumental in creating a culture of mobility on campus.
The longer-term benefits on student attainment and employability mirror the research carried out by HEFCE in 2009 and more recently by the UK International Unit [IU] and clearly show that students with international experience on their CV routinely achieve better academic results and gain employment faster upon graduation, often with a salary on average £4000 higher.
