Durham University’s commitment to improving the employability of all its students is explicit in its Strategy 2010-2020, a key aim of which is “To provide our students with outstanding and distinctive opportunities for personal development, ensuring future success and employability.”
To achieve this goal the University ensures that its students are comprehensively engaged in extending, recording and promoting their skills and abilities in ways that are relevant to the needs of a wide variety of employers both in the UK and overseas. We strongly believe that one of the ways that we can prepare our students for taking up employment in the global workplace is to undertake a period of study or work abroad. We also believe in the benefits to our staff of a period of teaching/training abroad and the opportunities this not only provides for strengthening the links for student exchange but for forging longer lasting collaborations with universities outside the UK. For those students who cannot avail of such an experience, the opportunity to learn and interact with incoming students from our partner universities and engage with the teaching of incoming staff is a major benefit which also contributes to broadening the horizons of our student body.
Durham University has made a commitment to increase undergraduate students undertaking an international study or work placement and has set key performance indicators (KPIs) to reach ambitious goals. KPIs projections are to increase student mobility within the Erasmus+ programme from 88 non language mobilities in 14/15 to 180 in 2018/19. Further objectives are to raise the percentage participation across all mobility programmes from 9.8% to 12.1% (based on current projected cohort numbers) again by 2018/19. Durham runs a significant number of programmes that include a compulsory year abroad particularly within Modern Languages, which make up almost 80% of all mobility at Durham. Whilst this is a positive figure overall, it was recognised that to achieve the KPIs and objectives of the University Strategy 2010-2020, mobility needed to be opened up to all students. Beginning in the academic year 2014/15, all Durham Undergraduate programmes were adapted to include an additional year abroad. This has particularly impacted upon previously under-represented subject areas such as STEM subjects (Engineering, Physics and Mathematical Sciences) along with other non Language programmes where we have seen a definite increase (14%) in the number of students opting to undertake a mobility.
Language is primarily sourced as being one of the main barriers to mobility amongst students and Durham also strongly believes in the benefits of language learning and have made it possible for students across all subject areas to undertake language courses offered by our Centre for Foreign Language Studies. This has been in the form of credit bearing courses and a targeted Study and Work Abroad language programme beginning in January 2016. We recognise that not all students will be able to reach the proficiency levels necessary to undertake a full programme of study in another language and we therefore also encourage students to undertake study placements through the medium of English, but at the same time offering the opportunity to learn another language for social purposes.
The project involved both student and staff mobility. In 2014/15, Durham achieved a record number of mobilities: 410 in total, 268 Traineeships and 142 Study mobilities. Staff participation in mobility was significantly lower with only 12 mobilities in total; 7 teaching and 5 training mobilities. As mentioned in later sections, this could be put down to lack of awareness amongst non exchange familiar members of staff. We are forecasting an improvement on this number in 15/16 as the channels of communication have been widened significantly to increase participation.
As a result of this project our students have engaged in 268 study placements and 142 work placements with 297 partner institutions/organisations in 20 countries. The number of non language students undertaking a mobility has increased by 25% from 2013/14 to 2014/15. Durham academic departments realise that through student and staff mobility the potential for enhanced cooperation and an additional 8 partnerships have been established within Teaching and Research collaboration with current Erasmus+ partners as a result of mobility.
The increased international dimension to degree programmes at Durham University, together with the incentive for students to undertake language courses and the increased diversity of international students on our degree programmes will lead in the longer term to the development of world citizens who can take full advantage of and contribute to the development of the global workplace. The opportunities for Durham to cooperate and contribute both in Europe and globally has been made possible in part by participation in Erasmus+.
