Increasing the opportunities and participation rates for student mobility is a stated aim in the new University Strategy. This supports our stated objectives from the University?s Erasmus Policy Statement which are to:
1) to maintain and develop mobility activities across the university's departments and support offices to foster an environment in which international student and staff mobility is encouraged, supported and recognized
2) to improve cultural, social and environmental competencies and prepare students for the global employment market.
3) to expand the portfolio of opportunities available to students and staff in order to increase participation to include options such as summer schools, short courses and internships
4) to encourage departments to embed academic and placement mobility as core activities to ensure that as many students and staff benefit from the scheme We aim to expand the number of taught degree programmes offering a "year abroad" option, develop elective placements for vocational courses and coordinate international field trips and identify opportunities in particular for PG level students through the development of new joint degree programmes. We wish to support the careful growth of distance learning, particularly to enable flexible professional development at postgraduate level within a global context.
The Centre for Global Programmes (part of a wider International Relations department) at the University of York is committed to delivering a range of high quality mobility programmes for students and staff and is the designated hub for the management of incoming and outgoing international mobility for students and staff. The office liaises with departments through a network of academic coordinators responsible for reviewing incoming applications and promoting and expanding outgoing opportunities in their departments. Together, they are also responsible for selecting outgoing students and staff for mobility programmes such as Erasmus+.
The University of York undertakes to respect all of the principles in the Erasmus charter for Higher Education 2014-20. This project is part of our strategic objective to increase the number of international opportunities offered to students and staff at the University of York. The project saw 104 participants receiving funding for Erasmus+ KA103 activities in 2014/15, comprising of 95 students and 9 members of staff. 55 students took part in student mobility for studies between programme countries and 40 were funded for student mobility for traineeships between programme countries. 3 members of staff took part in teaching activities and 6 went on training programmes between programme countries.
Students on degree programmes that allow a period of work abroad to count towards the degree have their traineeships approved by their Departmental Erasmus Co-ordinator. In 2014/15 students worked at a variety of different destinations including schools, private companies and charities. STudents who undertook study placements were assessed at the end of their mobility and credit was transferred back to their home institutions via transcripts. All students who successfully completed their placements were awarded academic recognition and progressed into the next stage of their degree programme. These students were re-integrated through departmental and university-wide initiatives to help students articulate their experiences, and a number of students have become student Ambassadors for the Erasmus+ programme and for study abroad in general, assisting Centre for Global Programmes staff with promotions and events.
Inter-institutional agreements exist for staff and student mobility for studies and wherever possible the University tries to align these partnerships strategically so that multi-layered relationships are formed through joint research and teaching collaborations as well as student and staff exchange. A significant project into mapping European activity has been initiated and we will continue to work with our International Partnerships team to identify partners with whom we can forge long lasting and productive relationships.
In future Erasmus+ projects the University of York will be working to increase the number of mobile staff and students. In addition to key action 1, the University was also awarded International Credit Mobility funding in the first round of applications in 2015 in order to develop our partnerships with Indian and Canadian institutions.
