In 2014 University of the Arts London approved an International Mobility Strategy 2014-2020 with the overall aim to increase student and staff mobility. This is in line with the University Strategy which commits to increasing opportunities for student and staff mobility, and thus contributes to the Europe 2020 Strategy, the EU Modernisation and Internationalisation Agenda for Higher Education, the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education as well as the UK National Outward Student Mobility Strategy.
During 2014-2015 an objective was set to increase student mobility by at least 20% and staff mobility by 50 %. The Erasmus Plus funding for Key Action 1 Learning Mobility of Individuals has been crucially important for us in order to achieve our objectives.
Overall, 255 project participants have benefited from mobility opportunities. Student mobility encompassed 210 participants with student mobility for traineeships being the biggest project target group - 135 students. 75 students accomplished study placements in various HEIs across Europe.
University of the Arts London is delighted that staff mobility numbers have increased five fold over this period, with a total of 45 staff members having participated in staff mobility for teaching and training during the academic year 2014/15. We acknowledge such an increase as a huge success and a result of professional teamwork and dedication of the University staff.
The highest student mobility flows for studies and traineeships have been to France (75), Spain (34), Germany (27), Netherlands (16), Sweden (13), Italy (10). Staff mobility has taken place in various European countries, ensuring wide breadth of professional and cultural exchange.
In line with the European Union?s Modernisation and Internationalisation Agenda in Higher Education our participation in the Erasmus project enabled us to develop international links and cultivate international research interests to inform a curriculum which is culturally diverse and fosters employability and enterprise.
Our students, who have undertaken study and traineeships abroad, will be better equipped for the global labour market: students have increased their cultural awareness as well as professional skills, gained valuable intercultural and international skills, improved their language skills and developed a network of friends across the EU.
The staff members who participated, benefited greatly from the project; placing great professional and personal value on the Erasmus supported teaching and training mobility period abroad. It is viewed as reinforcing international dimensions of their career, enhancing their engagement in international research cooperation and networking as well as contributing to the improvement of their academic competences. Having taken an active part in the Erasmus plus programme themselves, staff members are able to provide better advice and support to UAL mobile students.
Mobility activities under the Erasmus plus programme presented an opportunity for us to be involved in developing structured partnerships between HEIs and businesses, and education and training providers, thereby improving the quality and relevance of our educational offer. Increasing mobility and cross-border cooperation also helped us to increase the quantity and quality of project and research bids in cross-disciplinary fields with external partners who are leaders in their disciplines (e.g. INTERACT project).
