Loughborough University has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research, enterprise and sport and is keen to ensure that it remains in a position to respond to change, particularly with regard to the increased globalisation of higher education. It is crucial to the University?s success that it continues to develop strategic partnerships with European and international institutions and that it produces graduates who can make a significant contribution to a global society. Students are, therefore, encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to spend a semester or a full academic year at one of our partner institutions so that they receive a high quality educational experience.
The University has approximately 150 Erasmus+ partners in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Turkey. During 2014/15, the University set up nine new inter-institutional agreements with European HEIs: five of which are applicable to both student and staff mobility, and four relate to staff mobility only. It is anticipated that the latter will be expanded to include student mobility at a later date.
As the University does not currently provide funding for its international exchange programmes to Australia, Japan, Singapore and the USA, it is a significant benefit to students that they can apply for Erasmus+ funding for European exchanges, particularly those individuals who would not be able to afford to participate without a mobility grant. The opportunity to undertake a study exchange and/or a traineeship abroad is extremely attractive to prospective students, and it is clear from the feedback on Open Days that it is a key factor in determining where they wish to study. In promoting our exchanges to students, we always emphasise the long-term benefits of participating in the Erasmus+ programme and ensure that returning students share their experiences with their peers.
With regard to staff mobility, it is expected that participants contribute to the overall priorities of the Erasmus+ programme and to the University?s international strategy. Priority tends to be given to those individuals who have not previously applied for a staff mobility grant. As with returning students, staff are given recognition for the teaching or training activities undertaken, and they are asked to share their experiences with their colleagues. Participating in a staff mobility visit is not only rewarding for the individual, but it also has wider benefits for the University as a whole in terms of raising its profile, developing the existing relationship and exploring other ways in which it might be possible to collaborate.
