Erasmus+ is the main mobility programme for students and staff at TU Wien (TUW) and therefore an important tool to implement the international strategy of the institution. The range of partner-universities include either longterm (research)partners or reflect trends in student mobility.
The aim to increase outbound student mobility could not be achieved during the project period. The main obstacles encountered are: high number of part time working students for economic reasons, the low amount of the scholarship, difficulties to find mobility windows and the fear to loose time when studying abroad. Initiatives to overcome part of these obstacles have to be (and were) targeted to a more specific information about concrete study options and their benefits at host institutions, marketing of the programme through all possible channels (personal counselling, social medias and web, events, posters, handbooks etc.) and the maintenance of a transparant recognition culture.
Despite these obstacles, feedback of mobile students had been excellent - in terms of achieved competences as well as Organisation of the programme (see 7.& 9.).
The growing interest and positive results of outbound mobility for traineeships was visible during the project period and will have an impact on the perceived value of this activity and the recognition of internships towards curricula.
Inbound student mobility was satisfactory in numbers and results. It is intended to use its benefits even in a more efficient way towards "internationalisation at home" - e.g.: exchanges within co-supervised diploma theses, international teams in student-projects, extension of the tandem language learning programme, incoming students as "ambassadors" of their home institutions and motivation-factor for local students to study abroad.
Teaching staff mobility was mainly used as a tool for strengthening existing (research)partnerships and extending it to education. In many cases outputs of billateral projects were presented to graduate students or PhD-candidates. The numbers achieved, exceeded the expectations. The value of this activity is still more individual than institutional.
Outbound mobility for staff training showed promising results but the numbers are still low - despite the fact, that this activity is an offer within the interal continuing education program. Continuous advertising of the potential benefits and upgrading of participants are therefore important for the future.
