Anglia Ruskin University is committed to its ongoing process of Internationalisation, of which the Erasmus programme is a vital part. We have been actively developing and strengthening our relationships with institutions in Europe and beyond, to offer our students the opportunity to experience international dimensions in their degrees, and our staff the opportunity to participate in international training, teaching, exchange of ideas and research collaborations.
Our project was focused on increasing the engagement of our students and staff in international mobility and widening access to the opportunities available through Erasmus+ across our portfolio of courses.
Through the project our Undergraduate, Postgraduate (Master and PhD) students have opportunities to study abroad, normally for one semester as part of their course at Anglia Ruskin University. Study abroad periods are now available to our students within our Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences, Lord Ashcroft International Business School, Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education and Faculty of Science and Technology. Currently, our students have opportunities to study within the EEA and North America.
We have a small number of successful active relationships where shorter mobility periods are integrated into the course, such as in Art and Design at undergraduate level and Intercultural Communication.
Mobility at PhD level is relatively new for us but is an area that we are expanding. Our Departments of Education and English have been leading our development in this area with new agreements in Turkey for Education and an expanded agreement with an existing partner in Spain for English. Development of opportunities to support student and staff research activity are key initiatives to support our Corporate Plan targets for research activity, quality and internationalisation. Where possible we have looked to offer postgraduate mobility opportunities with partner institutions where we have successful undergraduate arrangements. An example this year was where we have set up this year in Sweden for Social Policy and Sociology.
In addition to the number of study abroad opportunities, our Lord Ashcroft International Business School is starting to realise the potential to internationalise its work placement year which is available to all Undergraduate September starter students. The first international placements will take place from 2016-17. In addition to improving encourage student retention, satisfaction and employment outcomes, which is one of our corporate goals.
While our project has been successful in increasing mobility opportunities and raising awareness, we recognise that we still have a long way to go in terms of turning interest into action and meeting our targets for participation in mobility activity.
In 2014-15, we sent out 21 students through Erasmus study mobility, 18 staff members through staff teaching mobility and 2 staff members through staff training.
Our key objective in taking the project forward is to increase these participation numbers and our Erasmus Co-ordinator is working together with departmental co-ordinators, support services and other relevant internal stakeholders to set out new targets and put in place plans to achieve them. This is being supported at Senior level by faculty Deans and Heads of Services.
