Higher education student and staff mobility project

The University of Wroclaw has been participating in the Erasmus programme since 1989. In the academic year 2014/2015 the university began a project within the new edition of Erasmus+ programme. The main objective of the project was to achieve the goals contained within the European Policy Statement of the University as a further step of its internationalisation. The major goals included in the contact with the National Agency and in the Erasmus Charter, that were met, were: - to offer UWr students the opportunity to spend part of their studies at a partner university abroad - to enable UWr students a professional work placement at a company located in one of the programme countries - to enable both students and staff of UWr to learn from the experience of studying/working in the international environment thanks to our hosting a large number of incoming Erasmus students and staff - academic staff exchanges, which on one hand raised the level of the study programmes by including visiting international lecturers and on the other hand enabled our academic teachers to test their teaching and research skills in the international environment - to offer international training to the non-academic university staff - to increase language skills of the university students and staff to both those participating in Erasmus mobilities abroad and those who haven't gone abroad, by offering them in their everyday university life regular contact with international students and staff at UWr 748 UWr students (bachelor, master, doctoral) took part in Erasmus mobilities in 2014/2015. There were 503 language but also social science and law students, who went for Erasmus studies (SMS) mainly to Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, France and Italy. The placements (SMP) concerned 245 student mobilities, including 44 graduates and took place mostly in Germany, Spain, UK, Czech Republic and Italy. The placements were the most popular among language, social science and biotechnology students. 359 university staff members participated in Erasmus exchanges including: - 195 academic teachers (STA) mostly from the study fields such as language and philology, social science and law, went mostly to Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, France or Lithuania; - 164 staff training visits (STT, offered according to the university policy to the non-academic staff members). This kind of a mobility was offered as a priority to the staff involved in work for Erasmus mobilities and also staff working at the university language centres, libraries, financial units etc.. The most popular in this category were the universities or companies located in Italy, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary, Spain and Germany. The total number of the mobilities was 1107, which was 10 more than was planned in the project. The extra 10 were student placements. In the academic year 2014/2015 UWr had institutional agreements with 380 universities from 30 countries. The majority of partner universities were located in Germany, Spain, France, Turkey, Italy and the UK. Within the project the UWr hosted 369 international students (SMS) of the partner universities from 22 countries. They were usually students of humanities and social sciences recruited mostly from universities in Germany, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Czech Republic, France and Portugal. A number of the incoming students, after accomplishing their mobility, applied for the full time master studies in English offered at UWr. Additionally the University of Wroclaw received over 100 incoming staff members of both kinds (STA,STT). 25 of them took part in the Erasmus Staff Week organised by the International Office. Thanks to participation in the Erasmus project the UWr enriched its course catalogue in English. The incoming students could choose courses contained in 24 full degree programmes (BA and MA) offered in English, free of charge. The prospect of long-term benefits are the result of the international relations of the academic staff, who strengthened their scientific cooperation during the teaching visits (STA). On such occasions several new projects were created eg.: double degree master programme with I PADOVA01, study courses included in full degree programmes taught by the UWr teachers and PhD students (F RENNE02, LV RIGA08) , co-guardianship of PhD studies of UWr students (CZ PRAHA07, I NAPOLI01) The results of the projects were not only beneficial to the University as such, but first of all to the participants of all the kinds of mobilities. Through participation in the project both the students and the university staff members had, without doubt, a great opportunity to increase their language and interpersonal skills and to enrich their professional experience. Nevertheless the most valuable aspect of the Erasmus project was its international character, which definitely had a very positive impact on the participants, their perception of the world and the values of other cultures.
