The University of Warsaw, founded in 1816, is the largest institution of higher education in Poland and has become the country’s leader in teaching and research. From the beginning, it has played a major role in the intellectual, political, and cultural life of Poland, and has been recognized worldwide as a leading HEI in Central Europe. Each year, the University provides education to 45,000 undergraduate and graduate students, 3,200 PhD candidates as well as 3,800 students of post-diploma programmes. 3,600 scholars teach and conduct research in humanities, social and natural sciences, as well as numerous interdisciplinary fields, which combine knowledge from various study and research domains. The University has actively participated in EU educational programmes, including Erasmus since 1998.
Main goals of the Erasmus+ project (Learning Mobility of Individuals - 2014/2015) at the University of Warsaw: increased mobility of students and university staff; enabling students and staff to gain international experience and improve their professional, linguistic, and multicultural competence; improved cooperation with foreign HEIs; improved quality of teaching and research; improved internationalisation and worldwide visibility of UW.
In the 2014/2015 edition of the project, the University of Warsaw cooperated with 420 HEIs under 1,100 interinstitutional Erasmus+ agreements. There were at least 2,967 completed mobilities, including 1855 outgoing students and staff members and 842 incoming students and academic staff members (726 and 116 respectively). Among the outgoing participants, there were 1128 students going abroad for studies, 362 interns (both students and graduates), 224 UW academic staff members going abroad for teaching at a partner institution and 98 other staff members who participated in trainings abroad. 98 students received extra funding to cover associated costs on their Erasmus+ mobility due to their disability or difficult financial situation.
The goals of the project were fully achieved. The quality of research, teaching and innovation have been the main criterion for international partnership and alliances which, thanks to trust and sustainability, have guaranteed an added value for all parties involved. International cooperation with strategic partners is aimed at long term collaboration with special emphasis placed on mobility and joint teaching activities /degree activities.
