The participation of Merseburg University of Applied Sciences in Key Action 1 of Erasmus+ contributes significantly to the internationalization processes at the university. For more than two decades, the university uses this instrument to give students, teachers and staff the opportunity to gain formative experiences. They have the chance to experience a technical exchange at European level and thus acquire skills useful in personal and professional environment. The university does not aim to have the greatest number of partners, but is interested in stable and continuous cooperations, which are evaluated annually in the respective university committees. The linguistic preparation for these stays is a crucial part of the "Internationalisation at home". This includes for example the establishment of an English language curriculum to be attractive for international partners. In addition to the extension of personal horizons, the acquisition of decisive key qualifications such as intercultural skills, improved language skills and organizational skills increases the chances for students in the labor market. Another goal of the program at the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences is to allow teachers and staff a European exchange. These personal contacts are crucial to stable partnerships and help to coordinate joint projects. The fundamental element of this project is the student exchange. During the reporting period 34 students with an average stay of 4 months completed an Erasmus study stay. In addition to that, seven teaching mobilities and one staff mobility for training were realized. The personal experience abroad, as well as the improvement of language skills is the motivation for the majority of students. Some students and graduates completed internships within the framework of Erasmus. Those are managed in a separate project in the consortium of several universities in Saxony-Anhalt. The majority of outgoing students is from the Department of Social Work. Media. Culture. Students of engineering and natural sciences often use the Erasmus semester in order to realize a practical project or thesis at the partner university. The International Office supports the participant before, during and after the stay. Obstacles to mobility from the students’ perspective were financial problems, possible delays in their studies, as well as high bureaucratic hurdles. During the reporting period English modules for Erasmus incomers were developed, recognition processes and the website optimized. Regular events informing about the Erasmus+ program for students and the dialogue between all stakeholders within the university (Rector, International Office, International Program Coordinators of all departments) are self-evident. Using the Key Action 1 of Erasmus+ enables the university to meet the requirement of a world that is growing together by giving students, teachers and employees the opportunity to interact with each other on professional and personal levels.
