Higher education student and staff mobility project

ENS Louis-Lumière (The National Film, Photography & Sound Engineering School) is a public higher educational establishment, which runs courses at Master’s level. Training is provided for future professionals hoping to work in the areas of sound, photography and film. Candidates need to pass a national common entrance exam to get on the course, there are 16 places available per department per year. When we applied for the Erasmus+ charter in 2014, the only period devoted to student mobility was the 6th semester, which was also the period dedicated to graduate research. This allowed students to carry out their research abroad and to follow courses in the partner establishment. This time period, however, was not ideal since it jeopardized the successful completion of the research component, an integral part of the course and qualification. In 2015, the mobility period was changed to the 5th semester, allowing students to validate a semester abroad without compromising their graduate research. Compulsory work placements at the school are shorter than the 2 months required to benefit from the SMP opportunity. Students wishing to carry out a work placement in Europe are encouraged to look for longer placements in order to benefit from the programme. The provisions made for 3 SMPs, modified when submitting the intermediary report were unfruitful for various reasons: either because the minimum duration was not possible, or because the placement did not correspond to the brief imposed (by the school). Two students were able to undertake a student mobility: one went to the Portuguese national film school (ESTC) a long-standing partner, the other inaugurated a new partnership with Yasar University in Turkey. Both tested the new mobility period - the 5th semester; both successfully completed the semester. The contact with the new Turkish partner has been prolonged via an invitation for a professor to be a member of the jury for the next student film festival organized by Yasar University, coupled with an invitation to speak at the same event. Although there were no STA or STT mobilities emanating from ENS Louis-Lumière personnel, the school was able to invite an Irish photographer, represented by the Nag Gallery who came to present her work to the Photography students and staff. The talk was well attended and much-appreciated; it was followed by a workshop. She also offered an individual portfolio review, which attracted both students and personnel. The photographer teaches at CIT - Crawford College of Art and Design with which we are hoping to establish an Erasmus+ bilateral agreement. Both establishments are currently involved in a large format portrait project where students in each country photographed major players in the art and photographic worlds in France and Ireland. One of the objectives is to exhibit these portraits in both establishments, with a simultaneous opening night. The impact of the project goes beyond the two establishments since the portraits will be exhibited this July as part of Cork Photo 2016: http://corkphoto.com/project/five-four-crawford-college/. English is the only language taught at the school; formal teaching is reinforced by numerous talks and conferences given by professionals in the photography, sound and film world as part of the course. The offer of a workshop and a portfolio review in English was very rewarding and will be continued. ENS Louis-Lumière has welcomed Erasmus students for a number of years. 3 Erasmus+ students at Master's level, from different German HEEs studied at the school over the course of 2014-2016. Two were in the Film department, one in the photography department. We were thus able to reinforce our links with FHS Köln and to set up two new partnerships. We also signed a bilateral agreement with The Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Poland. Furthermore, the school hosted an STT mobility, the head of Communications at the ESTC in Portugal came to the school for a week in September. The resulting exchange of best practices was beneficial to both establishments. The policy of hosting students and staff under the Erasmus+ programme is important in creating the desire in students and staff to envisage an Erasmus+ funded mobility, even if the effects will only be visible in the medium term.
