The unity and quality of research and teaching combined with educational justice and social inclusion are foremost objectives at the UDE (University of Duisburg-Essen). Internationalisation in research and teaching is intended to work towards these objectives and add its own dynamic perspective. In its strategic orientation, internationalisation serves to strengthen the position and raise the profile of the UDE on a national and international scale. The UDE sees internationalisation as a university-wide objective, in which promoting international dialogue and exchange in research, teaching and academic study are of central importance. This is reflected in the UDE taking an international perspective in its appointments policy, diversity management, and human resources development. The UDE does not regard internationalisation as an end in itself, but rather asks how international activities can help to advance strategic goals in higher education development in general. For every international project, thought must be given to who will benefit from its implementation and to what extent it thereby supports the UDE’s general strategic goals. The University’s “Open-Minded” motto sets a binding standard for teaching and research and encourages outward thinking across territorial and cultural boundaries. As an active member of the European and global knowledge society, the UDE considers cross-border communication to be indispensable in advancing scientific knowledge and raising the quality of scientific and academic activity. The UDE wishes to give its students the best possible education and training and prepare them for an increasingly international and globalised labour market. It employs various instruments to systematically develop its students’ international competence and at the same time acknowledges and integrates their own valuable intercultural resources. Within this commitment the ERASMUS+ Programm plays a central role. International cooperation is essentially built on close scientific, academic and personal contacts and grows out of the work of the researchers at the UDE. It is only on the basis of this work and these contacts that geographical priority regions and international networking can be established university-wide. The UDE is committed to making all international researchers and international students feel at home on its campuses and in the entire university environment. It therefore does everything in its power to create an appropriate culture of welcome.
