In the Karolinska Institutet (KI) institutional strategy (Strategy 2020), our Erasmus Policy Statement and our Action Plan for Internationalisation of First Cycle and Second Cycle Education 2014-2017, the importance of internationalisation is stressed. The overall aim of KI is to improve people's health through research and education. Internationalisation, i e all activities bringing an international dimension to the university, is essential for maintaining and increasing the quality of higher education on all levels and to attract the most prominent students and staff world-wide.
The long-term benefit and objective of the project, together with other internationalisation activities at KI, is to contribute to meeting the above overall aim. A short-term goal is to increase mobility among students, teachers and staff.
Fourteen students participated in student mobility for training, 98 students undertook a period of mobility for studies, and 24 and 9 people participated in staff mobility for teeaching and staff mobility for training respectively. The numbers for student and teacher mobility are lower than expected, but we exceeded our expectations when it comes to student mobility for training and staff exchange.
The activities undertaken among the students consisted of courses, clinical rotations and projects. Since all our study programmes are within the health care or biomedical sector, all activities undertaken have been within those areas. Teachers have taugh within theses areas as well, and other staff has participated in staff weeks, courses and job shadowing.
Students, staff and teachers have overall reported a high satisfaction with their exchange experience. Important impact as stated in the reports is, among students, improved problem-solving skills and increased ability to carry out studies independently. Also worth mentioning is increased ability to cooperate in teams and an increased belief in one’s own abilities. All these skills are beneficial in the long term for the students’ professional lives. The staff report that they have developed new learning practices or teaching methods and increased their job satisfaction; factors that will be beneficial to the whole university and provide an international aspect to students and staff not participating in mobility activities.
