The Erasmus Policy Statement of Vilnius University has emphasized the need to expand the scope and geography of exchanges as well as seek means to balance their reciprocity. International mobility and participation in Erasmus+ is seen as a strategic tool to improve quality of the academic activities and develop service infrastructures thus increasing internationalization of the institution in all spheres of its life.
The main objectives of the project is: a) to increase the number of mobile participants (students and staff); b) ensure transparency of the procedures in organizing mobility activities; c) ensure full recognition of study periods abroad; d) balance exchanges in terms of reciprocity of incoming and outgoing flows and the needs of individual faculties and study programmes; e) increase international and intercultural awareness not only of academic but also of the administrative staff; f) improve quality of services and teaching activities.
Erasmus+ became an overarching programme at the institution involving the students of all levels (Ist, IInd, and IIIrd cycles) for the study periods abroad as well as academic and administrative staff who were given opportunity to visit partner institutions and enterprises, share experience and improve their competences.
All the activities have been geared towards reaching the indicated objectives. The activities were concentrated on providing information on Erasmus+ mobility possibilities in the comprehensive manner; transparent student selection procedures, student and staff support before, during, and after mobility as indicated in the Erasmus Charter; monitoring study period recognition after study periods abroad; management of Erasmus grants for all mobile participants in a timely manner; integration activities of the incoming students (orientation week, ESN activities and events, provision of language learning opportunities, solutions to everyday problems); updating academic offer for incoming students and implementation of their on-line registration, etc?
Participation in the programme has impact on individual, faculty and institutional levels. Mobile participants improved their skills and competences. Faculties used the possibility to refine their international strategies in respect to the institutional one and opportunities provided by Erasmus+. Mobility of the administrative staff on the institutional level has been matched to the needs to improve spheres indicated in the Strategic plan of the institution, thus leading to the development of new approaches in teaching and services that ought to be implemented in the future (modular system of studies, policy on academic offer in foreign languages, strategies of attracting incoming and make home students interested in studies abroad).
The University is constantly searching for more effective and efficient ways to ensure programme implementation at the necessary level of quality. The longer-term benefits are expected on the faculty level through updated skills and intercultural competences of the academic and administrative staff and institutional level through the improvement of quality of academic offer, student support services (information, registration, integration, accommodation, provision of various languages); as well as the development of the comprehensive mobile staff recognition scheme.
