Higher education student and staff mobility project

At Halmstad University we can see a small increase in the interest of students who are interested in participating in the Erasmus program. However changes are coming slowly so it will be too early to say if it is a trend and at this point there has been a decrease in the number of students taking part in the program. Several of our programmes with a mobility window have changed which inevitably has affected the number of students with the possibility of going abroad in a simplified way and at the end also affected the number of participants. The university has reorganized its administrative support and this has effected the way we work and in some areas we have also loose speed. However our ambition is that the reorganization will change the mobility activities for both student and staff. Halmstad University is striving to have an equal division of participants of men, women, ethnicity and background. Halmstad University is actively working with the reaching out to students from disadvantage groups however this is not a statistic which we track and therefore no data which we will be able to report.The impact of these efforts is not something that will only affect the Erasmus programme but all areas of the university. The participants in the Erasmus programme should reflect the university as a whole including both staff and students. There is an ambition that our student population should be represented when it comes to studies abroad. This is something that we are going to work more intensively with. As seen in the students' responses the majority feel that they are more open to cultural differences as a result of their mobility abroad and the benefits from this is crucial looking at the world today. This shows the impact studies abroad could have on the individual student, the university and the surrounding society. Halmstad University strives to foster students well equipped for their working life and an international experience is one part of this. We are striving to have more staff involved in the programme in the future since we can see the impact the teaching staff have on the students. When the initiative regarding studies abroad comes from a lecturer it is more likely that students will go on a exchange. It is also beneficial for all students to have a lecturer who has experience from internationalization. This will open up to discussions in the class room and give an international perspective to the students studies. Since the world is coming closer every day it is essential to all staff, both academic as well as administrative, to have an international experience in order to meet the needs of the students. With the current situation in Europe today is important if not crucial that the university is well prepared. One conclusion one could draw from the participants answers is that the questions are not quite clear to the participants and as with all surveys one has to look to the questions to understand the answers.
