Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), created in 1990, has always had a strong international outlook that has led it to establish links and set up international projects with the best universities in the world. Through an extensive and selective network of exchange agreements, mobility programmes enrich the campus with international students and at the same time allow more than 30% of its graduates to include having completed mobility as a differentiating factor in their CV.
Participation by UPF in the Erasmus+KA103 programme has meant that during the 2014-2015 academic year a total of 627 students have benefited from international mobility. Though mostly academic mobilities —581 students—, in recent years UPF has made an effort to increase training mobility, with the aim of providing comprehensive education to its students through the acquisition of knowledge and practical skills that favour quick and appropriate transition into the labour market. As a result of this aim, 45 students have spent a period doing an internship abroad.
Concerning staff mobility, UPF has also increased its participation, having conducted a total of 26 mobilities, 14 for training and 12 for teaching, with an average duration of four days.
Regarding the geographical distribution of mobility, the main countries of destination for students, both for studying and for training, are the United Kingdom and Germany, followed by France and Italy.
In terms of the profile of the participants, 70% are women (globally, taking into account both students and staff). Although in general the university has more women than men, the difference is not so broad (52% in the case of staff and 57% in the case of students). The explanation may be found in the fact that mobility is higher in studies such as languages, social sciences and communication —where the students are mostly women (as much as 80% on some degrees)— and is less common in engineering studies, where the proportion is reversed (80% of men).
Concerning student mobility, inter-institutional agreements are mostly for semester mobility, while the average duration of mobility is four months with 25 ECTS transferred back to UPF. This indicator accounts for the academic progress of students during mobility.
Currently, UPF has 278 Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreements signed for student mobility with 140 Universities in 24 participating countries. The largest numbers of agreements are, in this order, with universities in Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany and France. The goal of UPF for the forthcoming years is, on the one hand, and in respect of institutional relations, to strengthen collaborations with strategic partners, and in respect of participants, to reach 40% of graduates participating in an international experience during their studies at UPF and to continue fostering staff mobility.
