The Università degli Studi di Perugia, a Higher Education Institution whose primary objectives are education, research and innovation, has established an internationalization strategy aimed at supporting the international mobility of students, researchers and staff, with the purpose of having a strong impact on both the quality and significance of the human “capital”, thus supporting a “Knowledgeable Society”.
It is for the aforementioned reasons that the Università degli Studi di Perugia has always paid close attention to the opportunities offered by the European Commission, participating in Erasmus actions from the very beginning, in 1987.
In order to participate in the Erasmus+ program the Università degli Studi di Perugia, a holder of the ECTS label since 2013, has obtained, from the European Commission, the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE), thereby committing itself to respect its qualification conditions and more specifically the recognition of the activities that have been carried out as well as the established standards of cooperation with its international partners.
The specific objectives pursued and fulfilled in the 2014/15 A.Y. mainly concern the qualitative and quantitative aspects that have been predetermined both by ECHE and through the aforementioned internationalization strategies. The International Relations Area, supervised by the Deputy for International Affairs and in close collaboration with its departmental Erasmus coordinators, has strived to publicize and implement the Program, as well as supporting both incoming and outgoing participants. Firstly, the University has worked in the respect of the principles of equity and transparency, determined to grant equal opportunities by opposing discrimination as well as by increasing the number of participants in individual mobility exchange initiatives. In doing so, it has always paid special attention to support disadvantaged categories and/or minorities. To this end, and in addition to the allocation of extra funds, our University has sought to improve the transparency in its selection procedures and in the awarding of mobility grants. Secondly, in order to ensure the recognition of both academic titles and mobility periods, the Institution has committed itself to adopting and sharing the tools provided by the European Union aimed at the transparency of both required qualifications and acquired competencies, mainly favoring mobility with the aim of improving both its capacity to attract and the quality of its educational offer.
During the A.Y. 2014/2015, with regard to the mobility project, and after the University (or Departmental) Erasmus Committee had carried out the required selection procedures, in compliance with public calls for proposals, the Institution has carried out the following activities:
- Student Mobility (study): 387
- Student Mobility (traineeship): 168
- Staff Mobility (teaching): 76
- Staff Mobility (training): 24.
If compared with last year’s numbers, the data show an increase in the overall participation in the Erasmus program. More specifically, the students’ mobility for study purposes has increased by 20%, whereas the mobility for training has been raised by 66%. Similarly, the data relating to staff mobility show encouraging results, with a 15% increase for teaching activities and a doubling (100%) for training-related ones.
The mobility periods taken into consideration were carried out at Higher Education Institutions, companies or other organizations with which our University had stipulated agreements within the framework of the Erasmus+ program.
The participants, supported by both the International Relations Area and the Erasmus coordinators, have signed, before their departure, a detailed work plan with the hosting institution.
The tangible result of their mobility is the full recognition of the activities carried out abroad.
All participants have expressed full satisfaction with regard to their experience abroad, a fundamental moment in their educational and professional career, providing them with the opportunity to interact with different realities, in relation with educational contents, innovative systems for the organization of study activities as well as good practices for working-related activities. Other significant outcomes, from the participants’ final reports are related to: personal and cultural growth, better career opportunities, the chance to improve their knowledge of a foreign language and, most important of all, the opportunity to live in a foreign country, thus interacting with other cultures.
The staff mobility has provided the participants with the opportunity to consolidate and broaden the relationships with partner institutions as well as to extend collaborations, increasing the number of mobility exchanges also in other disciplinary areas of mutual interest and favoring the creation of joint study programs.
