Since its accreditation in 1969, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ) is one of the four Mediterranean Agronomic Institutes of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM). IAMZ-CIHEAM fulfils their mission of agricultural cooperation development set by updating and perfecting training for professionals and promoting research programmes of common interest for agriculture in the Mediterranean region.
IAMZ’s activities include advanced courses for professionals and Masters of Science programmes, divided into five functional areas: Plant production; Animal production; Environment; Food Science, Technology and Marketing; and Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The Master programmes have a fundamentally applied orientation, with numerous practical activities so that IAMZ students can acquire valuable skills for their professional and scientific careers in different specialities. The Masters are all structured in two parts. The first part has a professional orientation comprising lectures, practical sessions, individual and group work as well as technical visits. The second part consists of an individual project of initiation to research or to professional activity. The majority of these projects are conducted at one of the many national and international institutions with which IAMZ has agreements of collaboration.
Although a practical placement period is not compulsory in all the IAMZ Master programmes, IAMZ always encourages international mobility and helps students and graduates to find placements in different businesses and institutions in the agro-food sector. In the past, most IAMZ students did their research work and placements in institutions and firms in Spain. However, the possibility of financial aid through Erasmus+ has opened up the opportunity for internships in other European countries.
Therefore, under the Agreement of Support 2014-1-ES01-KA103-001518, five mobility placements have been coordinated for second year Master students or M Sc graduates from the four Master programmes. The professional internships and international mobility are a determining factor of learning, where students have the opportunity not only to improve their training in their area of study but also to acquire important skills that will help them orient their future professional career.
The placements within this project have helped to clarify the future of the students taking part. Two students went on to study doctorate programmes, another was hired for a project in the Foundation where he had done his placement, and another two are seeking employment with animal nutrition firms.
