Higher education student and staff mobility project

We received the ECHE in 2014, and we felt it important as a signal to the international partners, we wanted to cooperate with. We intended to increase the maturity of our organization and our international outlook in this period. This has been accomplished. It has also shown us, where we need to improve and what we lack. Overall it has confirmed, that international cooperation and exchanges are rewarding. Our strategy and objective is to ensure that our graduates are ready for a global world and possess intercultural competencies, as well as mastering English as a working language - to the benefit of the maritime industry. Our participation in this programme has been a part of this. We are still in the first stage of exchanges but have in this period prepared the organisation, learnt valuable lessons and harvested the first, very positive experiences. During the programme period we have strengthened our partnerships and arranged for the first exchanges. We have laid the groundwork for future cooperation with two other institutions. We have prepared our teachers for increased use of English in the subjects and examinations. We have now had the first exchanges of students and staff (teachers as yet only outside the ERASMUS + programmes). Internationalisation, both student exchanges and internships, are part of our strategy and as many of our students have seagoing service in international trade, we exceed the target set in the development contract of at least 50 % international internships. Our experiences during this period are limited, but positive. We are convinced that the international study environment has seen a good start and we expect to increase exchanges in the next period. The results from student exchanges were rewarding and shown inspiration, personal growth and new experiences for the students as well as new ideas for staff and teachers. We have sent administrative staff on two exchanges. Incoming teachers were from outside the ERASMU+ programme in this period but we had very good contact with management and administrative levels at partner institutions throughout the period and will make good use of these connections in the future. Outcomes: Programmes are designed with mobility windows in mind. English is used more widely in the subjects and examinations, which makes receiving students easier. Our experiences with the preparation and debriefing of students is positive, it is easier if they attend regular classes after - when they only do the bachelor thesis after, they are harder to reach. We have improved the maturity of the organisation with respect to handling exchanges but still have steps to implement. Recognition of credits worked well but we need to have more papers prepared in English regarding quality system etc. We only had one student actually enrolling with us from abroad under the ERASMUS programme and due to a personal/financial situation the student returned without finishing classes but in terms of communication and discovering which services were needed we learned much from this. Students spread the word of their positive experiences and will attend introductory meetings on internationalization as far as possible (considering internship periods and graduation). Staff have been informed of the inspiration and practical adaptations and improvement to procedures following the participation in International Staff Weeks and other departments have been invited to join. Some teachers have expressed interest, as has the Open Learning Centre, Study Administration and Finance department. Through common partners we were included in a study of how some countries were hit harder by challenges to secure employment of master mariners within the EU, where the president of the Hochschule Flensburg visited us several times - to find out how Denmark was so successful and to report back on the common findings. Later he returned to talk with management, international office, quality management and lecturers about innovation in educational approaches, organizational structures and quality and allocation of teachers and subjects, to mutual benefit. Future: We need to achieve more shorebased internships abroad in the next period. We now have students presenting their experiences to others, in addition to the steps taken to encourage our student to study or have their internships abroad. We will increase the number of informational meetings with students with students participating, in support of the written presentations. Teachers and administrative staff are informed of the possibilities and encouraged to make use of our contacts and supporting systems, as well as presenting own ideas for exchanges, cooperation or networking. This is done at team meetings or in the annual employee development interview. We expect to increase the numbers of exchanges as well as cooperation projects and networking to make the most of shared experiences and synergy between the institutions.
