Higher education student and staff mobility project
Date du début: 1 juin 2014, Date de fin: 31 mai 2016 PROJET  TERMINÉ

BACKGROUND ON THE PROJECT: When it comes to people moving to, through and around Europe, Marseille has always played a key role. It was in fact the Marseille-Mediterranean College of Art and Design (ESADMM), whose history can be traced back to 1752, that managed to get art and design schools in France to take part in the Erasmus program. For so many years now, our institution has continually put international exchanges at the heart of our curriculum, which has made ESADMM one of the most dynamic schools of higher education in France in terms of such exchanges. For the 2014-2015 academic year, ESADMM has continued its policy of creating and reinforcing its ties with the rest of the world. As a part of this effort, we encourage our Masters I students to study abroad in one of the 49 colleges of art and design with whom we have official partnerships—34 of which take part in the Erasmus program. In addition, all accepted dossiers benefit from financial aid. OBJECTIVES: The universities and colleges that ESADMM has teamed up with for these exchanges offer a very high level of education in the fields of contemporary art and design, and boast a remarkably fertile artistic and cultural environment which greatly helps students advance their research. This large choice of institutions, most of which are in Europe, really boosts our students mobility and truly helps these upcoming artists choose their creative path. NUMBER OF STUDENTS / TYPICAL PROFILE: In 2014-2015, 35 out of a class of 70 students went abroad for an international exchange, 15 of whom took part in an Erasmus program. There were slightly more female students who took part in the exchanges than their male counterparts. Note that only those registered as Masters I students are authorized to participate in these international exchange programs. DESCRIPTION OF WHAT WE DO: Our main activity is setting up and monitoring exchange programs with our partner institutions. This includes meeting with potential student-candidates and helping them through the Erasmus+ selection process, staying in contact with our partner schools, putting together student dossiers and requests for student grants, etc. In terms of our work with Erasmus+ students from abroad who come to our campus, our International Relations assistant helps them out every step of the way, for the duration of the exchange. International exchange students fully participate in all of the activities ESADMM offers—from class trips to Biennale expos or to contemporary art exhibits, to get-togethers with internationally renowned artists, to visits to production sites in the region, etc. At the end of the academic year, a special event is held at ESADMM to mark the end of their exchange, in the form of a collective exhibition and/or a publication to present their work to students, faculty and visitors of the school. IMPACT AND ACHIEVEMENTS: Throughout the 20 years that ESADMM has been participating in the Erasmus+ program, the number of students venturing abroad through an international exchange has remained high. Though the student exchange program is fully developed, we now need to improve our internship placement program. The benefits of these exchange programs are indeed remarkable. Upon their return, students have acquired a new foreign language, have improved their English level, and have created a real network of international contacts. However, these are only the most visible changes. Students also return more open to the opinions and cultures of others, more ready to re-evaluate their work and research in relation to their exposure to different ways of approaching or teaching art and design—all of which will allow them to become more active members of the international art world and allow them to more easily find work and build their careers.
