Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts sees itself as a big regional HEI in an international job and education landscape, as a window to the world of Dortmund and as a space, in which Dortmund experiences internationality, where it can be experienced and lived. Following the target agreement with the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research of North Rhine-Westphalia for 2012 and 2013 and the university development plan Fachhochschule Dortmund set up its in-house internationalization strategy. The aims defined for the sector “Internationales” are that the students and graduates are fit for the international world of work, HEI staff is intercultural competent and does live internationalization, teachers and researchers are internationally experienced and linked.
Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts is striving to increase the student mobility in the 1st and 2nd study cycle. Especially extra-curricular terms abroad at qualified HEIs abroad or voluntary internships abroad are generally favored and are supported by intensive counseling and by financial incentives. The strategic aim of FH Dortmund to increase the student mobility in form of studies abroad, internships abroad or other forms of study visits abroad has considerably been supported by the Erasmus+-Project 2014.
The mobility activities of teachers do cover teaching and research activities. Next to teaching and research visits at international HEIs other forms of staff mobility will be supported, in order to enforce the international networking. This includes visits at partner institutions on a regular basis, participation in international workshops or in international conferences.
Regarding the ERASMUS+ support of student mobility especially students from underrepresented groups (e.g. students with children and students with migration background) were called upon for application. The development that Turkey turned out to be the No.1 country of destination, is an indication for a successful appeal to the target group.
Another focus was set on the rise of participation numbers in the field of internships abroad. In order to reach this aim, consulting staff in the internship offices of the faculties has been informed in detail about the funding in the line with ERASMUS+. The students of Fachochschule Dortmund have been offered informational sessions about internships abroad with focus on ERASMUS+, both internal faculty sessions and overall sessions regardless of the faculties. As a result, the number of participants increased by 33% compared to the year before.
In total 70 participants have been sent out during the project. 17% of which are students in internships, 82% of students in studies abroad and 1% staff mobility. At the same time Fachhochschule Dortmund did welcome 53 exchange students and 8 staff members for teaching.
