Higher education student and staff mobility project
Date du début: 1 juin 2014, Date de fin: 1 juin 2016 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Mobility and transnational co-operation have been an integral part of the daily life of teaching and research at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) for decades. Internationalization is a central part of the 2014 target agreement which was signed for a period of 5 years with the Bavarian Ministry of Education and Science. Advanced students and young academics participate mostly in mobility programmes. In order to enlarge its numerous internationalisation activities in terms of quality and quantity, FAU takes advantage of the many international co-operations in research in order to internationalize teaching and foster mobility. Outgoing students’ activities are supported and promoted at all levels. In funding period 2014, 451 students were sent abroad with an Erasmus funding for study purposes (SMS) and 126 for internships / practical placements (SMP). In comparison with the previous year, the total sum of outgoing students approximately remained the same, still a shift from study mobility to the shorter and thus more feasible internship mobility can be observed. The change from LLP to ERASMUS+ brought along not only new conditions and a reshaping of the EU mobility programme, but also necessitated restructuration and changes in responsibilities at FAU. This seems to have led to some sort of uncertainty and hesitation among students, which expresses itself in an decrease of 10% in SMS mobility, compared to 2013, whilst during the previous 5 years, this mobility had constantly increased at almost the same level. As for funding period 2015, the status quo will be reached again and FAU will send abroad in increased number of approx. 540 SMS students. As in the previous years, around 30 staff members we funded for a short-term teaching assignment abroad. The highest increase in mobility is visible in Staff Mobility for training purposes (STT), with a total of 68 mobile staff. The university board considers this type of mobility as extremely important since it provides a unique possibility to sensibilise staff for the concerns and needs of internationalisation and to integrate these issues into the university-wide quality assurance and development. Erasmus+ with its focus on a high quality of information and assistance provided to mobile participants, above all contributes to the enhancement of quality standards, such as the integration of students and staff from abroad and support services for outgoing students and staff. At, FAU mobility windows and soft skills with international contents were implemented in existing curricula and processes for recognition of credits from abroad were regularized in a transparent manner. The service for advice and the offer of integration for international students was strengthened, and were needed, enhanced. Information on the study offer, application and admission processes and on funding, accommodation and scholarships was improved ad is available online in 2 languages. When analyzing the answers in the participant reports (EU survey) as far as outcomes and competences are concerned, among outgoing students it is striking that according to their own judgement, they have become more self-assure, more flexible and better at solving problems and have improved the intercultural abilities. Whereas teaching mobility above a serves to strengthen the ties with the partner institution, it is worthy noting for administrative staff mobility, that participants highlighten the acquisition of practical knowledge and the improvement of their improvement of their social and intercultural skills. Both groups agree that their mobilities improve networking and to broaden their horizons. Erasmus+ substantially contributes to impart linguistic and intercultural skills to FAU students, which are key to their future professional success, since in almost all sectors, future employers are focused on an international market / environment. Erasmus+ is an integral part for realizing one of FAU‘s aims as mentioned in the internationalisation strategy, namely to expand the international accessibility of FAU degree programmes and to impart international and intercultural skills to all FAU students. Internationalisation as a cross-sectional theme does not only influence core areas such as teaching and research but also all other organisational areas, among them administrative services and non-academic staff. Erasmus+ mobilities enable FAU staff to shape their own working environment cosmopolitan and to handle their daily work tasks successfully.
