The project ‘The new full-time. Combining paid and unpaid work in a well-balanced and qualitative way, for women as well as for men: an exploration of European initiatives concerning the 30 hours working-week’ contributes immensely to enlarge the knowledge about work duration reduction as an instrument to achieve a well-balanced and qualitative combination of paid and unpaid work for – and between – men and women. The primary goal of the project is feeding the social debate on this subject. This is necessary because the unequal division of household affairs and care of the children between man and women influences the income and career of women in an negative way. Lots of women – and more and more men – are bowed down by pressure of time. For them the combination of work and care is not evident. In Europe, there is a lot of knowledge and experience concerning work duration reduction, on different levels en in different contexts: nationally and locally, in businesses and in public services, in technological environments as well as in environments of care.To feed the social debate Femma wants to interview some experts with the objective of:- gathering the necessary management expertise for taking up an experiment on the 30 hours working-week in its own organization;- deepening the content and management knowledge;- setting up a European network;- developing accessible methods to take the story to the 800 Femma groups.4 staff members are involved in the project:- the personnel responsible, who will have to carry out the experiment on the 30 hours working-week in the organization;- two policy officers, responsible for enlarging and deepening the subject, setting up an (inter)national network and commit the exercise to paper;- a syndicate responsible – and social media manager – who will have to carry out the experiment on the 30 hours working-week in the organization and is responsible for the social media communication on the subject. The project includes visits of:- FNV Vrouw, a Dutch organization of and for women. FNV Vrouw promotes, by means of lobby and action, a better division of work and care. The organization offers a stage for women who want to share experiences;- the people responsible for the experiment on the 30 hours working-week in the old people’s home Svartedalen in Göteborg: mr. Bengt Lorentzon, miss Monica Sörsensson and miss Monika Axhede;- miss Birgitta Olsson, senior lecturer of Service Management and Service Studies, University of Lund. Miss Olsson carried out different researches on work duration reduction and coached case studies as well;- miss Joa Bergold, gender quality expert and research officer at the Swedish Trade Union Confederation LO in Stockholm;- mr. Boris Karthaus, work duration reduction expert at the German Trade Union IG Metall in Frankfurt. IG Metall ran a survey on the subject in which more than half a million workers participated, and believes in the introduction of the 30 hours working-week.Femma sets up a steering committee that will be dealing with the practical and contentual preparations of the project. The visits will take the shape of workshops in the act of which the steering committee – in co-operation with the project partners – will structure the subjects, will work out presentations and plan opportunities for discussion and exchange. What will Femma do with results of the project? Femma will- put them into practice within the own organization;- work them into a book;- share them (inter)nationally. The results of the project will contribute to putting the well-balanced and qualitative combination of paid and unpaid work for women as well as men high on the national social agenda. The subject will attract the attention of citizens, media, the business world and social organizations (public agenda) and politicians will approve it and seek for policies (political agenda). The project has an impact on all this because:- it substantiates the dossier contentually;- it shows how to set up your own experiment and how to measure its effects.Femma also wants to set up an European network. By making connections and sharing expertise, the subject will get a more important social position within Europe as well.
