Promoting learning through the evidence based methodology of co-teachingCaroline Criel (headmistress), Anne Rasschaert (special education coordinator), Benedikte Timbremont and Charlotte Fiers (pupil guidance centre) are attending the conference: “Course and multiplier event TEACH: Evidence Based Education.” on 09/06/2016 – 10/06/2016 in Granada.Pius X school houses 7 kindergarten classes and 11 primary school classes. Pius X is part of the associated schools group KSDH together with two other primary schools. Our main mission is to provide quality teaching, highly effective learning and care for every individual within a framework of Christian values. Our schools are a place for children to live and learn. Living and learning are firmly connected. We respect and value the diversity of our students. We welcome children from all backgrounds and abilities. We strive to meet the needs of each individual in order to provide a positive educational experience. To achieve our mission all members of our school work together. The headmaster, miss Caroline, is assisted by staff members in cooperation with education-related organisations including the Associated Schools Group, pupil guidance centre, pedagogical guidance services and external support. The school board coordinates and supports the educational programme. André Govaert and Geert De Lepeleer, chairman and member of the school board, are active in internationalisation projects. In our school there are students with special educational needs. These educational needs relate to learning disabilities, reduced mental capabilities, autism spectrum disorders, visual or hearing impairments, motor disabilities, gifted children,…Over the past years we have focused on an effective, school specific, teacher training policy to meet the needs of our students. The professionalization of our teachers requires continuous follow up. In September 2014 we resolutely decided to implement a modernisation programme. Under the guidance of special education and school development coordinator Anne Rasschaert we, as a team, searched for reasonable adjustments for students with special needs as prescribed by the M Decree of 12 March 2014. Benedikte Timbremont and Charlotte Fiers of the pupil guidance centre, support this programme. Through further training and internal professionalization we found that the methodology of co-teaching improved our classroom teaching. Our co-teaching experiment resulted in success stories of inclusion. Children with special educational are given more space and time to develop their talents and capabilities. Together with their educators (teachers, parents and other persons involved) the children develop their own specific school programme. At this stage there is too little knowledge of evidence based education. Each day we experience the need to further specialise in this matter. In addition to co-teaching we want to examine other key aspects of evidence based in education. We are still searching for other methodologies and didactic methods who have proven to be successful through research. We would like to share our experiences with colleagues and crave for expertise across borders. Our participation in this project and the conference is in line with the vision of internationalisation of the associated schools group.
