Healthy and Fit in Later Life

The Learning Partnership studied offers for older people in the field of sports and movement, exchanged good practice and made proposals how to increase the level of physical activity among sedentary older people. In 2010-2012, a kick-off meeting, 4 international workshops in Ferrara (Italy), Rodgau (Germany), Graz (Austria) and Kaunas (Lithuania) and a final conference were held. Trainers and learners from partner organizations demonstrated, observed and tested soft gymnastics, yoga, adapted physical activities for Parkinson patients, adapted water aerobics, warm-ups and cool-downs, exercises for improving balance, strengthening cardiovascular system, coordination and stabilization with self-made equipment, such as tennis rackets made of wire coat-hangers, balls made of a plastic bag, music-circle and fitness-circle movements, parcours for fall prevention, Qigong, chair exercises, exercising techniques for backbone, stretching and relaxing, Nordic walking, Pilates with foam rollers and fitness belly dancing. The demonstrated activities were analyzed, reflected and transferred to local offers of the partners. A poster describing and illustrating 10 steps to start moving in later life was created in partner languages and distributed to target groups. The partners also acquainted with related local projects, such as Giusepina (physical activities for seniors at home), Bewegungsstarthelfer (Helpers to start moving), Healthy District Gries, outdoor exercising in Kaunas city parks. Official receptions by representatives of local authorities were arranged in each town to discuss sports, culture and international relations. Partnership experience and new ideas were presented in the final conference held in Kaunas in April 2012, in local press, TV news and special programs. The sustainability of the Partnership activities is ensured by improved offers and innovative approaches in partner organizations and by established new contacts locally and internationally.
