Our Project is for 10th,11th and 12 th grade students who have been studying in the nursing department in ilgaz,Cankiri, Malatya Vocational School of Health.
Elderly population has been gradually increasing both in our country and in the world. According to the EU Eurostat 2004 data, one of every six EU citizens is 65 years old or above. It is predicted that in the year of 2030, one fourth of EU population will be elderly. In our country, according to the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs 2003 data, the population of 65 years old and above was forming the eight percent of the general population. It is predicted that this figure will reach 11.4 percent in 2016 Approximately 80 % of people above 65 years of age are having at least one chronic (ongoing) disease. These diseases are mostly joints, blood pressure, hearing and vision deficiencies, and heart diseases. Elderly people and the patients who are in need of care are not self sufficient and they need care. As it is happened in every modern society, it is also our basic duty to provide quality care for our elderly people and the patients who are in need of care.
Old age period is a special period with respect to physical, psychological and social, so the people who will give nursing services to the individuals must know the characteristics of old age and must have special knowledge and experience.
Vocational education about nursing old and ill persons has been given to the nursing department students in our school. However, especially the practical application ways of students are very weak because they are having theoretical training at school but they cannot find enough application opportunity in the institutions belonging to the health and social services in our province.Qualified vocational personnel, in parallel with the need of health sector and having vocational qualifications, are not being trained. Whereas, our students must have sufficient skills in this area because after their graduation they will have opportunities to work in both public and private retirement homes, nursing and rehabilitation centers, health institutions and hospitals.
With this project, it is aimed to offer the nursing students to provide internship in the institutions/organizations that present elderly and sick care services in EU countries and to be employed when they graduate from their school by developing their vocational knowledge, skill, attitude and behavior on elderly and sick people care; supplying their adaptation to working life; catching up with the actual service environment; recognizing the facilities, tools and equipments that their institution do not have; following closely today’s conditions about elderly care and ensuring their adaptation to technological improvements and methods.
The expected results from our project for the students are; by transferring new information and techniques that obtained from elderly and sick training in Germany into our region, more quality elderly care applications will be done and qualified personnel need of elderly and sick services will be met. The students’ sustainable vocational knowledge, skills and competencies about elderly and sick care issue will improve; their employment and on-the-job productivity will increase; their self-confidence will develop; consciousness of being a European will occur; their vocational and daily foreign language will develop. With the help of the acquisitions of accompanying teachers, our school’s service quality on elderly and sick care, competitive power, entrepreneurship and productivity capacity will strengthen, the orientation level to EU will increase, and cooperation possibilities with our host partners on elderly and sick care will develop.
Our project will be realized with 50 students and 5 accompanying teachers for two weeks in Germany,Belgiuman, Czech Republic in jun-July 2015.
