The Jugendbildungsstätte Unterfranken in Würzburg coordinates EVS projects in whole region for many years. This time we decided to make a joint application for three hosting projects in Hammelburg that want to receive European volunteers: Kindergarten St. Josef und St. Marien in Hammelburg, Kinderkiste Hammelburg. This is why the project’s title is Hammelburg likes EVS‘. All the institutions are connected to the following topics: work with children, and support for the refugees in Lower Franconia, all of them are situated din the city of Hammelburg which is why we have planned a joint project. The organizations listed above want to invite volunteers from Europe to bring the intercultural experience into their work. At the same time children at those institutions will experience intercultural communication through the contact with volunteers. The volunteers themselves will learn how diversity can look in reality. It is also important for volunteers develop themselves during their EVS (they will get enough support for it) – and to gain new experiences (professional, social, linguistic, etc.) to feel themselves more confident. Since the institutions are rather linked to the formal education, we want the EVSers inside to bring non-formal forms of studying by their presence. A couple of project’s activities also support the asylum seekers who currently live in Lower Franconia. In Hammelburg live at the moment many refugees. The volunteer will participate in the language course with them as well as some of the children in the institutions have experience with escape. The project is open to integrate more ideas to support the refugees in Hammelburg. The project plans to invite 3 volunteers to Hammelburg. The ubi Unterfranken belongs to two European networks where they found two partners for this project European Network of Youth Centre – Filoxenia from Greece and Platform Network – Ayuntamiento de Murcia in Spain). Together with the coordinators we will select candidates and speak on the phone with them. For us it is important to know his or her reasons why they want to participate in the particular project. The St. Joseph Kindergarten in Hammelburg would like to have a volunteer from Italy as the European volunteer. The second kindergarten in Hammelburg - St. Marien wants to invite a person from Spain as a volunteer. In both institutions, the volunteers will work for 10 months (from October 2016 till July 2017). They will play with the children, do handicrafts, painting, etc. They also have the possibility to realize their own ideas - garden project, cooking, films from their country of origin etc. The volunteers will not only support the team but they are also seen as part of the team - they will participate in team meetings, training, and other mutual activities. The Kinderkiste in Hammelburg has also decided to take European volunteers – Alise Intenberga from Latvia for a period of 10 months from October till the end of July 2016. The kids are visiting the Kinderkiste after the school - first they get lunch, then they do their homework. Then they can play and use multiple recreational facilities: in the handicraft room, in the library, in the gym, etc. The volunteer should help in all areas and also they can realize their own projects, such as: help by reading, cooking, theater projects, etc. Each of the above mentioned projects organizes a language course for the volunteers (once a week). The volunteers also will have the regular meeting with their mentors with the purpose of reflecting and analyzing the course of the project. All involved in the project have decided to take the volunteers with the support of the coordinating organization - Youth Education Center of Lower Franconia. The organization also cooperates with IN VIA Würzburg eV, which also coordinates EVS projects in the region. The both coordinators take care that all the volunteers in Lower Franconia keep themselves in contact. Once a month there is an official meeting for all volunteers with the two coordinators - they're going hiking or cook together, etc. The meetings are important to strengthen the network of volunteers in the region.General, we expect that by the presence of the young people from Europe and their engagement the project the involved institutions will get more intercultural more intercultural. Volunteers should bring refreshment, new ideas, different experiences, approaches and perspectives. The children and young people but also the residents of the local communities will become more open and curious for new things through the regular contact with European volunteers. Also, the three volunteers themselves should learn to work as a team member, to get acquainted with new methods of working with children and youth, to become more self-confident and independent, to improve the knowledge of foreign languages, etc. For us it is also important to strengthen the networking between in EVS in the region.
