Grundtvig Learning Partnership – Deafblind

This partnership brought together 9 of the most important organisations working for deafblindness in Europe, from 8 different European States. It has developed the European Deafblind Indicators and presented an updated report on the levels of support and the quality of practice offered across all European states to deafblind people. It also wanted to outline the latest demographic trends which show an increasing number of people who will experience deafblindness. It was the first to explore the differences between states in their approach to disability rights, social care and legislative responses for deafblind people. The final report calls for improved recognition of deafblindness as a specific and distinct condition, and underlines a need to develop a common framework in order to systematically assess the situations of deafblind people now and in the future. The project had 7 meetings: • Glasgow, October 2012: to agree working groups on 7 different life domains and associated indicators in relation to deafblindness.• Aalborg, June 2013: to review the indicator sets and to prepare the questionnaire to be distributed among the European countries. Additional survey created for deafblind people and their families (All partners).• London, July 2013: interim small group meeting to prepare presentations for Lille.• Lille, August 2013: the questionnaire was approved, as well as deadlines for data collection. The project was presented to delegates of the Deafblind International Conference held in Lille.• Den Bosch, February 2014: to analyse the data and prepare the writing subgroup. • London, Mars 2014: interim small meeting to finalise the report and prepare all final data tables and results.• Conference in Barcelona, June 2014: the final project report presented at the conference outlined a number of findings and recommendations from this two year project providing the first overview of opportunities and services for deafblind people across Europe.
