Throughout the century. XX poverty have been been claiming as a prime area of study in the social sciences, contributing to the understanding of the phenomenon and the definition of the various social policies to combat poverty, exclusion and social inequality.
Poverty is a socially constructed category that incorporates a plurality of negative meanings and connotations that are reflected in society and consequently deteriorate the social interactions and the quality of the environment.
It is important to reflect and act upon phenomenon in order to understand their diversity and the objective repercussions (difficult to meet basic needs for food, health, housing and education) and subjective (how people feel inside) on individuals and societies the experience, calling for greater intervention by the public and the third sector.
The eradication of poverty and social exclusion is one of the main challenges of development and human rights of our century, with a growing awareness that it is imperative to reconcile economic development with cohesion, social justice and sustainable development.
The current rapid pace of exploitation of resources of the planet will not allow ensuring environmental sustainability for generations to come.
Therefore, the lack of financial resources for investment in solid waste treatment and low waste technologies increase the amount of pollution. At the same time, environmental problems are also responsible for increasing poverty they jeopardize economic activities that communities depend, especially in rural areas.
It is therefore essential to think the reduction / eradication of poverty through a perspective of sustainable development, preserving biodiversity and ecosystems, and through an integrated work and partnership between civil society, the state and the third sector in order to achieve equal opportunities, freedom, social justice and quality of life.
