Global Development at Horn's Mill

Horn's Mill Primary School is a one-form entry primary school, situated in the village of Helsby, in Cheshire West and Chester. Numbers on roll are growing (currently 170), with approximately 25% of our pupils being from a Gypsy Roma Traveler heritage. The percentage of children identified as having Special Educational Needs is slightly above National Average and the proportion of children entitled to free school meals (disadvantaged children) is in line with national averages. French is currently taught on a rota basis by the Subject Lead. This needs to change so that the school can ensure they are fulfilling National Curriculum requirements and ensuring the children are reaching their potential as language learners and well-rounded European Citizens. The biggest barrier to this happening in school is staff skill level and confidence. We have developed our team over the last 18 months and under the excellent leadership of the new headteacher, we are now in a place where we would welcome this project in school and have the skills needed to ensure it is successful. The aims of our project are as follows: -To embed language teaching in the curriculum at Horn's Mill-For French to be taught consistently in every class and for the standards in French teaching to be high -For participants to grow in their knowledge and understanding of French Language and CultureOver the two years of the project, we will send 8 participants to France, on week-long immersion courses. This will enable participants to grown in confidence due to an increased skill level and first hand, authentic experiences. Each wave of participants to go to France will, on their return, plan and deliver whole staff training to increase the skills level off all staff in school. This will enable the next set of participants to go on their course better prepared so that they can take more on board. This process will repeat, enabling each set of participants to build on the experience off all the previous participants. As a result of this we will be a school where the children are confident and enthusiastic language learners with appropriate inter-cultural understand for their age. We will see children keen to communicate with children from other countries, asking questions and celebrating differences. We will see French being used not only in French lessons, but across the curriculum, embedded in classroom practice. The children will leave our school and arrive at Secondary school with a confident grounding in French and transferable life skills. As well as developing effective and sustainable language teaching and learning in school, this project will give the staff and children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, more life-skills and open opportunities which would not have otherwise been available to them.
