The ambitious 'GLAGOLICA - A EUROPEAN MUSICAL LANGUAGE' project has several goals: the pan-European presentation of a cultural heritage which is relatively unknown in Western Europe, but of considerable importance to a large area of South Eastern Europe - the Old Church Slavic literary language with its Glagolica writing. The Croatian Festival Kvarner wants to present this hugely important cultural heritage together with its three partners. The Festival Kvarner also wants to provide a musical presentation of the state of Croatia and the Kvarner region in particular, with Opatija being the centre of the project. This project is ultimately about creating sustainable partnerships in the south-eastern region of Europe and creating centres for musical expertise. The key focus of the project, partially as a symbolization, is Leoš Janáček’s 'Mša glagolskaja' (Glagolitic Mass), who with this mass has interpreted this exceptionally important Slavic cultural heritage in an incomparable musical style. This project will be completed and accompanied by two conferences and two workshops under the leadership of renowed experts, resulting in the creation of a 'language guide' for the producers and all of the interested parties in Europe. The 'Glagolitic Mass' will be performed in 2013 approximately ten times, in all four of the partner countries. The organiser is the Udruga Festival Kvarner from Opatija, Croatia. The three further partners originate from three nations. These are Slovenia with its acclaimed Festival Ljubljana, Serbia with the Organisation Jugokoncert (Belgrade Music Festival) and the Czech Republic with the acclaimed Festival Janáčkův máj. The concept intends that both the vocal soloists and the singers for the choir for the Glagolitic Mass come from the four partner countries. The European PURPUR ORCHESTRA will be playing the instrumental part.
