As is known, the project for the functional reconversion of the border customs inspection areas is deemed necessary in view of the entry of the Republic of Slovenia in the European Union and in light of the new customs provisions. The project falls within this framework and aims at the creation of the Fernetti - Sežana Logistic Platform, i.e. a single Italian - Slovenian loading yard, equipped with two perfectly interconnected “import” and “export” sections, that will considerably reduce operating time. From a technical point of view, the project is divided in two phases, main and complementary works. As regards the latter, the actions envisaged are aimed at upgrading the railway junction and the installation of an access ramp for lorries, to ensure road/rail intermodality, the acquisition of a forklift truck allowing, furthermore, the lifting of containers on site, in place of the slide ramp used to load lorries onto the railroad carriages. Complementary works also include the enlargement of the workshop and of the locomotive hangar from 300 to 700 sq.m.
