The volunteer exchanges between twinned cities is a two-way exchange: Young people commit themselves to carry out full-time voluntary work in social, cultural, ecological or sports associations and organisations. The volunteers combine their service with a long-term stay abroad (6 to 12 months). Young people from Cologne visit one of our partner cities, while young people from these cities come to Köln. The cities involved are Cologne and some of its partners: Barcelona (Spain), Beijing (China), Cluj-Napoca (Rumänien), Cork (Ireland), Esch zur Alzette (Luxembourg), Istanbul (Turkey), Katowice (Poland), Lille (France), Liverpool (UK), Rotterdam (the Netherlands), Tel Aviv (Israel) and Thessaloniki (Greece). Disadvantaged young people would also be involved. The result will thus be an intercultural exchange at different levels – between German and foreign young people living in Cologne, between young people with different levels of education, and between young people from Cologne and from its partner cities – all learning and working together.
