The Albert-Schweitzer-Schule (ASS) Hofgeismar is a Unesco-school und one of 31 Europe-schools in the state of Hesse (Germany). For years exchange programs with schools in Italy, the UK and the USA have been part of our school-life. Additionally, vocational training programs abroad have been arranged for interested students and students from abroad are regularly hosts in our school. In order to impart our students' basic competence for global communication also with regard to the following studies and the 'world of work', our school is working out a bilingual curriculum at the moment. Therefore a colleague took part in a CLIL course with a focus on social/historical subjects two years ago. Now a further colleague, representing maths and the (natural) sciences, shall acquire basic competences in the organisation of bilingual lessons and projects to let them become a part of the school program. During the two week CLIL course in Oxford the delegated teacher (subjects: maths and physics) will develop, test and reflect lessons or parts of them together with other European colleagues who teach these subjects. On the one hand this should lead to the practical use of the English language in the classroom and on the other hand the use of modern pedagogical methods and media. Later at the ASS the acquired competences shall be presented to the respective teaching staff in order to recruit further teachers (especially biology and chemistry teachers, too) for the elaboration of bilingual lessons or units. At the same time interdisciplinary projects e.g. via the eTwinning platform shall be activated. In the longer term this group of colleagues will develop a bilingual curriculum for the (natural) sciences as part of the school program.With the participation on this CLIL course the long-range implementation of modern bilingual teaching of maths and sciences will be placed on a firmer foundation, which strengthens the way we see ourselves as a Europe- and Unesco-school and also has an positive affect on the (more reflected) teaching in the native language. In order to achieve these aims, the whole project will be evaluated regularly by both teachers and students. The results will be published on the school homepage and, if applicable, by local media/newspapers to inform interested parents and the public at large.
