Fortress Europe 2.0 - Film Festival
Date du début: 1 janv. 2016, Date de fin: 31 août 2016 PROJET  TERMINÉ

The project takes the current issue of migration in Europe as its stepping stone. The organizations involved met at the 17th Nordic Conference of Migration in Copenhagen and discussed the need for approaches to the subject focusing on the role of art to empower migrant youth in Europe and beyond. Through fictional and artistic film production and screening we see a potential for creation of empathy as an alternative to documentarist or solely political showcasing of migrants keeping those groups reduced to their migrant-identities. The project will result in a film festival and is a collaboration of two organizations each from Denmark and Germany with a team leader, each consisting of five members. The profile of the danish organisation is formed on the academic backgrounds of arts, visual anthropology, European Studies and Political Science. All members have practical experience with project-management, centered around arts and cultural project in relation to refugees and migrant youth, youth participation and film festivals. The profile of the german organization is formed on the academic backgrounds of film, visual communication, migration, human rights, and urban sociology. All members have practical experience from active involvement in civil society over years in youth work, cultural and arts projects or social entrepreneurship. The activities of the project are imbedded in three parts; preparation, implementation and evaluation. In the preparational phase the members will collaborate on an “open call”, film-viewings, guest speaker invitations, selection and programming and categorizations of the films selected. Another key activity is the scouting and involvement of volunteers and specialized professionals, the latter to form an advisory board for the festival members. Due to the projects transnational scope this will happen through the web-based management tool “Basecamp” and through transnational meetings. The implementation of the festival will consist of filmscreenings, panel discussions, guest speakers and Q&A sessions related to the films. Volunteers partly with refugee backgrounds are to be involved in the implementation of the festival to empower and offer a platform for civic involvement. To examine the sustainability of the festival both an internal and external evaluation will be conducted as well as future steps to secure fundings for a second edition. We expect the implementation of the film festival as a result of the transnational collaboration in close supervision from the an advisory board. Furthermore the production of artistic/fiction films from the Global South should be the result of the “open call”. We envisage the impact of the festival to be an increased empathy towards refugees as well as and understanding of the complexity of the issue of migration. Furthermore we hope to empower and enforce intercultural and organizational skills among the volunteers. Through careful evaluation and supervision during the process of the making we expect the two organizations to improve skills as to be able to hold a second edition of the festival.
