In the project "Training for language teachers and educational staff of the Adult Education Centre Volkshochschule (VHS) Lippe-West"; 14 learning mobilities have been completed by seven freelancers and seven full-time employees of the Adult Education Centre Lippe-West, mainly in the field of foreign languages. During the two-week courses in England, France or Spain knowledge of the language, intercultural competence, methodology, didactics and quality management have been expanded and perfected. This involved learning about innovative new teaching and learning methods, experiencing new ways of teaching mediation, making new contacts on both private and professional levels, and expanding the existing network with partners in Europe. The VHS Lippe-West, which is located in a rural part of East-Westphalia wants to motivate more people in this region to learn and expand their knowledge of foreign languages in the context of lifelong learning. Therefore the competence of the language teachers has been improved – for example, in the use of new media. Teachers also have been encouraged to understand that lessons need not always take place in the classroom. Full-time VHS Lippe-West staff who do planning, organisation and management, need foreign language competence - if possible directly related to their work. Interpersonal quality when dealing with international visitors to the intensive German integration courses and courses for refugees have been increased by sustained foreign language skills, and the intercultural knowledge of the VHS staff. The potential longer term benefits of this project were a better motivation for teachers and staff, the promotion of professionalisation, to give suggestions for future EU projects and open the view for international networking in education. The project contributed to the internationalisation and professionalisation of education in VHS Lippe-West, and the wider region.
