Forest Power

Forestry is young vocation in Iceland but never the less Iceland has good higher education in the forestry sector. The main goal for this project Forest Power is to reach out to owners of small private family forests that might have little or none knowledge on how to run a forest. It will help them improve managing their forests more efficient under Icelandic climate and soil conditions and hopefully work as a wake up call for further education in forestry. This goal will be reached by transferring the programme Kraftsamling Skog (http://www.lrf.se/Medlem/Foretagande/Skogsbruk/Kraftsamling-Skog/) from Sweden to Iceland. Forest Power will be a pilot project for further Transfer of Innovation in forestry and is foreseen that this programme Kraftsamling Skog will be transferred to other Nordic countries as well countries in Europe and the Baltic area if this project works well.Kraftsamling Skog is the Swedish forest owners' knowledge investment for the purpose of improving profitability by increasing forest growth in family forestry. The investment constitutes a part of the LRF’s – The Federation of Swedish Farmers – campaign for the purpose of achieving better profitability, growth and attraction of green businesses, i.e. entrepreneurship based on forests, water and rural environment. The purpose of Forest Power is to increase the profitability of forestry by increasing forest growth. The vision is a growth increase of 20 % in private forests within the next 50 - 100 years. After attending Forest Power courses participants shall be aware of the opportunities for better profitability through increased growth of their forest. In Forest Power it will be possible to participate in study groups, courses, excursions, seminars, day or evening meetings, web-based training and get private advice in order to better learn how to increase forest growth and profitability. The book "Nya Tiders Skog" that has been used in Kraftsamling Skog will be translated and localized for Iceland. A new chapter about practical aspects of managing hedgerows and the practical aspects of Christmas tree production will be written by the Danish partner and added to the book. It constitutes the basic textbook for the study groups. In the second half of the project 8 model farms will be established all over the country and they have a central role in demonstrating the opportunities for increasing growth by practical forest management.
