There are many points of similarity between cultural heritage in Finland and Estonia due to both historical resemblance and cultural relations between the nations. There are also similar problems to be solved with this project. The project will raise the overall interest and knowledge about preservation of cultural heritage in the forest management related activities in Estonia and in Finland. By developing new methods and increased dispersal of information the cultural heritage in the forestland and landscapes will be better preserved for future generations. The key to the successful achievement of project goals lies in the dense cross-border co-operation. Protection of the objects is in correlation of people’s awareness. Lack of knowledge is the main reason causing objects damages. The value of the objects is increased by research, familiarity and management assuring sustainability. The wider the involved networks the better are results.That is why numerous different stakeholder groups, age and nation groups, owners and entrepreneurs, officials and scientists are involved into project activity. This secures existence of active networks and project impact expansion also after the end of the project. Goals and results pillars of the current project: 1. Broad information activity among different interest groups, publications, media campaign-awareness of the public, forest owners and authorities on cultural heritage improved. 2. Created dataset can be treated as a reserve of heritage and use during heritage affecting decision making- decreased risk of destruction of nature and cultural heritage 3. Private forest owners training and consulting resulted in the multiple use of forests and heritage presentations- increased image of the project area due to cultural heritage protection and exposition 4. Forest owners with different cultural background and language are equally interested in cultural heritage objects protection in their property The project is originated from the need for knowledge and guidelines among forest owners and - professionals observed by the project partners. Project goals and activity corresponds with Estonian and Finnish national development plans, environmental and forest sector strategies and development plans and also supports Vienna Conference resolution and European landscape convention. Achievements: The project focused on non-protected cultural heritage, which is unknown and unprotected mainly due to a lack of awareness. When correct knowledge of the cultural heritage is missing, it is difficult to plan for sustainable development. The project improved the overall knowledge and interest about the preservation of cultural heritage in forest management-related activities in Estonia and Finland. The project mapped more than 300,000 hectares and added over 4,000 new objects to a public database, which has reduced the risk of sensitive areas being destroyed. More than 3,000 people participated in various publicity events. The project also carried out joint training activities and produced four publications in various languages introducing cultural heritage.
