Food of borders
Date du début: 22 août 2016, Date de fin: 21 mai 2017 PROJET  TERMINÉ

We, from the association Associazione Sicily Plus, would like to make a point and to propose an idea for change through this exchange: realizing the extinction of xenophobia and racism through a universal action in which every human being on this planet partakes; eating!!! The project Border´s Food is committed to cultural and gastronomical sharing by learning social customs through cooking and eating together with all of the participants and their cultures. Through this method of exchange we share cultural experiences, stories, traditions, etc.., that encourage companionship, empathy, the exposure to and understanding of new cultures, and the destructions of xenophobic and racist barriers that are built into society, family, and other social agents. Within this project we hope to create a specific exchange with an alternative program based on family style meals in schools or communities in which guests of different nationalities breakdown labels, prejudices and behavior that promote cultural separation based on language or ethnicity. We hope to do this through the simple action of eating typical dishes from different places once a week to facilitate a relaxed discussion and exploration. Food of Borders will take place in province of Catania in the capital of the same name from October 22 to 29 October 2016 with 45 participants from 6 different countries: Turkey, Greece, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Lithuania. We aim for participants between 18 and 30 years old, preferably from rural areas, immigrants in some cases, with skepticism about the current social environment, an open mind, experience and enthusiasm for team work and collaboration, and a drive to improve local participation in the work place for the inclusion of the immigrant population. Our methods in all the activities will be based on an environment for give and take education in which we share experiences, values, customs, and behavior. The learning style will not just be through language but will be realized in all of our actions, emotions, and attitudes that develop as we explore and absorb new habits, understandings, and points of view: what we continue to call non formal education. The activities will include: Group Dynamics, presentations and discussions, Simulation games and workshops, cultural games and icebreakers, round table discussions, speakers, meetings, cultural excursions, Cultural Nights for every country, energizers, and other ideas and suggestions that come up as we move forward. We will have an extensive orientation to the exchange and the themes that we are exploring, as well as presenting the Erasmus Plus program the K3 program. We are very interested in channeling future ideas and movements around the theme of this project and the exposure to real life situations with respect to racism through collaborative efforts with experienced organizations and programs in the field, such as “Casa Famiglia Rosetta.” The project has a clear multiplier effect on all levels, beginning with the selection of participants as they gather information about relative percentages of immigration in their political and social communities, percentages of incidents of racist violence or aggression, discrimination, or xenophobia, stereotypes and labels, etc… This should help them orient and engage in their own surroundings and inspire them to do their part in their own local environments. The activities will encourage contact with the local population to inform and share with them about the Erasmus Plus program and other efforts related to this exchange, for example a cookbook of the culture of food in all the countries represented by the participants “Recipes of the World” as a tool for sharing culture and inclusion. Finally, one of the objectives of the exchange is to develop strategies for political change and institutional intervention for the inclusion of minorities, and for this the multiplier effect as well as being conscientious is crucial. There are countless social groups, organizations, participants, and communities who will benefit from the results of changing perspective, labels, preconceived prejudices, mistaken educational systems, etc… These benefits will be realized through the presentation, to both public and private groups, of two effective and original projects created during this exchange: “A Thousand Ways to Eat” to encourage the eradication of racist conduct in local environments, and the publication of “Recipes of the World.”
