FOOD for SOULidarity

The project will take place in Kostanjevica na Krki, historical town on the eastern part of Slovenia. It is Slovenia’s smallest and one of the oldest towns, rich in history, art, culture and nature. From April to November 2015, 2 volunteers will gain competences on sustainable development, local food supply, conscious consuming, skill sharing and active citizenship. They will assimilate information from methods of good village practice (beekeeping, permaculture, wine making, culinary, organic farming, natural cosmetic, recycle and reuse) and educate local inhabitants about conscious organic production and consume. They will also assist in the activities aimed at children, i.e. bread baking workshops, school vegetable garden activities, intercultural exchange and global learning, nature/ outdoor workshops. Other activities include organising documentary film evenings with discussion on sustainable topics; vegetable swap; taking part in the solidary purchase group; organising activities along the heritage trail; working with Roma and learning about their heritage. Volunteers will be able to gain access to the traditional ways of preserving food, processing food while learning bread baking, cheese making, wine producing, healing with herbs. They will also gain the opportunity to actively participate in farming households. Indoor activities include office work, setting up courses, setting timetables and rotas for the week. Volunteers will be introduced to methodologies and tools, known as ’12 tools for transition’, that can help support the process of transition to more sustainable, environment-friendly and resilient communities. Other methods involve learning by doing (hands on experience), field research, discussion, best practice presentation, interactivity, communication, kinestetic experience, peer learning as well as integenerational/ intercultural dialogue. Through the project, volunteers will gain competences on how to overcome poverty and strenghten local economies and well-being by engaging local community. It is an attempt to make both - volunteers and local community - more resilient to global threats, such as economy crisis and climate change, through grassroot local actions.
