The BilSE-Institute is located in the northeastern part of Germany, in the federal state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV). The area is economically affected by agriculture and tourism. Lacking of infrastructure, MV has to deal with increasing migration of young professionals and with obsolescence.
Therefor it was one of the major issues to stabilize and consolidate a professional competence for the agricultural sector. BilSE as state approved institute for education and research implements courses and offerings especially in the agricultural sector and for agricultural businesses, for more than 10 years now. Together with the regional farmer association of MV, with VET colleges and with the responsible department of agriculture in MV, the BilSE-Institute is
- developing and designing courses and policies for further education according to the actual needs;
- focussing on main key actions according to the actual needs;
- improving the education of young trainees and professionals.
A network of six EU-countries established during a LEONARDO DA VINCI partnership project provides the services and quality standards for these points. BilSE was a coordinator and leader of the project which led to a still existing relationship between the participating countries NL, F, HU, EE and AT.
Because of the process of globalization and internationalization of markets and because of growing technical development in all sectors it is necessary for the regional agriculture sector and profession to improve and adapt existing educational practices and structures to an international environment. The program of LEONARDO DA VINCI mobility and the ERASMUS+ program enabled young students to use the chance of an international internship. The main aim was to increase the attractiveness of agricultural business and profession in MV and to include the aspect of internationalization in the vocational education system. All involved VET colleges and associations were supporting the contents of the program and an international internship during the three years of vocational education.
Interested persons were mainly out of the agricultural sector, both trainees and staff related to education in different ways.
Based on experiences from past mobility projects a continuously need for exchange is in place and already going on, BilSE calculated with 20 participants per year from both target groups.
Every participant had to be 18 years old and highly motivated to work and experience a new culture with new methods and contents in working and teaching.
Using a devised application form the project manager at BilSE decides who was participating. Important was a motivation letter explaining personal input, interests and needs. BilSE informed about program structure and possibilities in close connection to VET colleges and profession. To realize directed organization and implementation of the internship, it was necessary to adjust intensely with both sides participant and the partner from each country. The contact and agreements were made by BilSE according to ERASMUS+ program standards and international network quality standards.
The participants were prepared by BilSE arranging preparatory meetings. All relevant documents, contract details, questions about security, organization, travel, accommodation, internship and work content; specific information about the country etc. were clarified during these meetings. All documents were based on the learning/working agreement, euro pass certificate and participation resume of ERASMUS+. At any time the participant’s security and safety was most important and basic details about organization and partner contacts needed to be clarified beforehand. Furthermore received the participants a professional mentoring on-site.
Particularly the content of the internship was defined by tasks and main issues:
- to acquire new professional knowledge/ technology/ methods/ curriculum
- to combine theory and practical work
- to improve international exchange of ideas and networking
- to include current topics and issues in existing curriculum and profession.
Completing an internship successfully was having an influence on professional competence as well as individual development:
- strong self-confidence
- high motivation and the willingness to achieve
- impulse for realizing new methods/ models/ contents
- becoming aware of the importance of international aspects and connections.
In the long term all experiences of such an internship was leading to promote using new technologies, new techniques; to implement internationalization in the vocational education and profession and makes agricultural business and profession more attractive for young students.
