Background / history of the project
The rapid changes that occur worldwide and more specifically in the countries of the European Union, in which Greece belongs, require immediate education reforms. Schools should educate European rather than national citizens, citizens who will be able to find the suitable European educational institutions, who will know how to find funding for their studies or their business enterprises. But most importantly, schools should widen students’ horizons from the narrow national borders to the larger European Union boundaries.
These radical educational changes demand skillful and qualified teachers. These abilities can be acquired by participating in intercultural training courses and project management training courses. During the courses teachers will be given the opportunity of exchanging ideas on various educational topics.
In order to achieve this level of education for teachers, our school planned and conducted a plan called “Friendship, collaborating schools for the cultivation of European Citizens”. In this framework, three teachers from our school attended courses in Portugal with similar subjects.
Achieved project goals
The teachers improved their intercultural and management skills of European programs.
They interacted teachers from different European countries and set the goal of future cooperation
They came in touch with different educational practices and approaches
They disseminated their newly acquired knowledge to their colleagues from their school and other schools
Number and profile of participants
The three participating teachers Konstantinidis Georgios PE70, Efthymiadou Stayroula PE11 and Mantzaridou Elisavet PE06
had very good knowledge of English language and experience in organizing programs since they had organized a variety of innovative programs in the past.
Description of activities
The participants prepared for the attendance to the seminars
They participated in intercultural training courses and European projects management training courses in Portugal
They presented the knowledge and experience they obtained to their colleagues and the parents of their students in their school
They organized a one-day workshop, where they presented the results of the plan to teachers from neighbor schools
They presented the results of their plan to the people responsible for the European programs in the Department of Primary Education of East Thessaloniki.
They presented the knowledge and experience they gained to the directorate of Drama's Teacher Association
Methodology of the project implementation
Through the participation in the training courses teachers worked as a group. Each individual was responsible for an area and after taking some action, he/she informed the rest of the group and the decision making process was team based.
The same used to happen after every mobility. The participant informed the rest regarding the experience he/she had in the seminars and pinpointed possible difficulties or problems ,in order to combat them all together.
Moreover, as a group they planned and conducted the rest of the activities, such as presentations that were the result of the plan
In the presentations, different materials were used, such as paper, Power Point, photographs and even parts that required the participation of the audience.
Short description of the expected results, impact and possible long-term benefits
The experience of the training courses equipped the teachers with skills and confidence about the organization and management of European programs. Hence, they were motivated to organize with colleagues from three other European countries an efficient intercultural plan that will possibly be conducted in the future.
They disseminated to their colleagues the experience regarding different educational cultures which they obtained after getting in touch with colleagues from different countries. It is reasonably possible that some of their colleagues will adopt some of these different educational approaches and that will be beneficial for their students.
Additionally, they will serve as models for their colleagues. Thus, the school will be converted to an open-minded school, a school that will prepare the European citizen.
At the same time, they can help colleagues from other schools to participate in similar intercultural programs,
