Feel like a migrant - multicultural approach in teaching

The integration of people immigrating presents a special challenge; it is a complex andlong-term undertaking. Anyone who is in favour of immigration should make an effort tofoster the successful integration of immigrants already living in countries and that of thenew immigrant. One group of people close to immigrants are teachers, trainers andother educational staff who in everyday working life have personal contact withmigrants.The project “Feel like a migrant” aims at:• developing and implementing concepts of multicultural teaching approaches as a newstrategy, through the development and realisation of workshops for trainers, teachersand other educational staff• developing innovative methods for the workshops to let the participants “feel like amigrant” and thereby enhance their empathy for their daily professional contact withmigrants• promoting an awareness of the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity in Europe• promoting an understanding of cultural backgrounds and providing reflection in order toincrease tolerance and to reduce prejudice and xenophobiaOutputs:• pilot workshops for trainers, teacher and education staff working with migrants in AT;ES, FR, UK• handbook (curriculum and tools) for trainers, teachers and education staff working withmigrants including teaching materials, tools and detailed descriptions of the modularcurriculum in the following languages: EN, DE, FR, ES, RO.• an internet website platform enabling communication among partners and consisting ofachieved project outcomes including the handbook with teaching materials• publications about project activities and foreseen results in the national languages ofthe partners + English version.• dissemination seminars (demonstration events) focusing on dissemination of theactivities of the project and the foreseen results in DE, FR, RO, ES, UK• multiplier conference for all project partners and other EU countries not directlyparticipating in the project.Impact envisaged:Better understanding of:• culture (of other people but also one’s own) and its implications• the complex processes in which people become members of communities• the basic attitudes, values and norms that construct a basis for facilitating the processof integration.• how to ensure that trainers, teachers and other education staff are better equipped inmulticultural competencies.
