The ideas of political, economic and social equality, living together without borders, exchange of ideas and goods and above all freedom of choice and freedom of speech, are in the very foundations of today Europe. Within last few years those ideas are endangered by economic crisis, recession, wars on European borders, terrorist attacks and growing extremisms. This is why readers and broader cultural public need to be reminded how to respond to such extreme situations, and it is precisely contemporary European literature that can provide the answers. The project "Facing destiny with courage – translation of 6 contemporary European novels" brings to Croatian readers works of art through which it is possible to review European past and present and to discover how can an individual find courage to face his or her destiny. Six novels by six acknowledged authors of different generations from six EU member states, which are to be translated from 6 languages, 5 of them lesser used languages, highlight different European experiences as well as multiplicity of perspectives, thereby encouraging intercultural dialogue.The translations will be published as books (in first print runs of 1000 copies) and as e-books, distributed to public libraries, bookstores, online bookstores and e-bookstores and thereby made available to the widest audience.Promotional activities will focus on informing as many potential readers as possible about the project through extensive media coverage, public events and presentations featuring authors and translators with an aim to stimulate interest in the project, to raise the profile of translators, to deepen the relationship with the existing readers and to attract new ones, especially among the youth.
