PROJET
TERMINÉ
Especially at vocational colleges the English lessons are required not only to convey language skills but also a vocational content; this project supports the teachers for these demands. The project is organized by Confluence Scotland. Confluence describes the spot where two rivers come together, which implies a place where different people, cultures, languages and knowledge meet, exchange and join. In a figurative sense, coming together and combining is the aim of the project:The participants would like to get to know further possibilities how to teach professional topics in the English language. The project aims especially at vocational schools, so that the part in the first week, which focuses on methods and approaches, suits the participants of the Alice-Salomon-Berufskolleg very well. Here the teachers see the possibility to learn and discuss relevant methods for vocational colleges. Within this context, the contact and exchange with colleagues from other schools and countries will be especially valuable.Besides these methods, language learning will be a key element in the course: job-specific vocabulary and language will be taught. According to lifelong learning, the general language skills will be practised and refreshed. Language imersion will be further experienced in the host families. Another central element is the introduction of the participants to local job related institutions and vocational colleges in the second week of the project. Gaining current insights in British practice is relevant, so that the new vocabulary and approaches do not remain theoretical, but fit into a vocational setting. The implementation, the relevance for everyday life, the current world of work abroad – all these things will “come to life” for the participants and only by that, they can pass them on to their pupils.Six teachers of the Alice-Salomon-Berufskolleg would like to participate. Besides English, they teach different subjects in various fields/classes. It is not known yet, how many teachers from other schools and languages will participate in this workshop. However we hope for an international group enabling a lively exchange. Experience has shown that the groups organized by Confluence Scotland consist of 15 to 20 participants, so that each participant receives individual support. The participants hope for various experiences, insights in the English language, methods & approaches and practice. All of that will hopefully give a complete picture, which the teachers will share with their colleagues when back at school and with which they will further arrange and develop classes. One possibility would be the development of a learning arrangement for a class, which would be interdisciplinary. In the long run the aim is to make the English language and British culture more accessible to the pupils and to prepare them for the world of work by practically orientated and suitable methods. The participants are sure that the project will contribute to that and that they will pass on their motivation not only to their colleagues, but to their pupils as well.
