TERMINÉ
Fachschule für Heilerziehung is a vocational school, in Hamburg / Germany, training students to become carers for people with disabilities. The training we offer is a three-year, full-time course with a state recognised examination.
The activities of Eurasmus + in this VET-school were both open to students and to staff members. The activities of this project are meant as a strategic approach of internationalising our vocational training for carers. We have been working with partner institutions in various European countries since 1998, enabling students from Hamburg-Alsterdorf to go abroad on work placements. Within the last 16 years our school has successfully built up contacts to enterprises in Denmark, Netherlands, France, Spain, Romania, Austria, Italy, Latvia, Estonia, the UK and Turkey. Our students and staff members undertook a work placement in social Enterprises and vocational schools for people with learning disabilities (such as residential homes, daycare centres, or sheltered workshops) in one of our partner facilities abroad.
All over Europe the working- and training conditions for carers in this working field are completely different. Therefore one focus of the project was to learn more about the concepts of the partner enterprises abroad and their impact on this working field. This project is also meant to increase mobility in the field of social work, which compared to other industries is generally still very low. Last but not least the project was important to improve language skills either in the language of the host Country or in English.
Participants of this project are Students and teachers of Fachschule für Heilerziehung as well as facility managers and staff members of the enterprises abroad.
Beneficiaries of this Erasmus + projects are two different groups of student learners, graduates as well as professional staff members.
The main activity was a long term work placement, open to students in their second year of Training and to graduates. These learners have decided for the major field of intercultural learning: they prepare themselves in a so called Europe class for 18 month before they go abroad. The curriculum contains theories of intercultural learning in the areas of politics, society, education, education and care. This created an awareness of the similarities and differences of the working and living conditions abroad.
The course contents are adapted to the course at home to ensure that the mobility period fits with educational framework in toto. The learning outcomes have been formally recognised through a Europass certificate The long term work placements were monitored by the professional staff of the respective enterprise / facility and by teachers from our school. These Students had been abroad for 18 weeks. These traineeships werecompulsory.
The second group of learners were students who have already done their VET traineeship in German enterprises and went for a work placement abroad additionally. In this group the students used the existing contacts in other European countries to make intercultural experiences in enterprises for people with disabilities. They learned more about different concepts and dealt with these experiences. These short term activities were placements between two to four weeks. This was an optional activity. The third group supports the professional staff of teachers. They went abroad between four to six days for job shadowing, to formulate quality standards and for mentoring our students abroad. These activities guarantee a good communication between the Vocational training school and the social enterprise abroad and ensure a high level of quality. These activities are also necessary to make sure, that the internship of the vocational training keeps well adapted as a part of the educational course. (5 L)
