Extension of the VTMIS surveillance system to cover the coastline of the Region of Crete

THIS PROJECT CONCERNS THE EXTENSION OF THE VESSEL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (VTMIS) TO COVER A GREATER AREA OF THE GREEK SEA AREA THAN THE AREA CURRENTLY COVERED. Expected Results: THE EXPECTED RESULTS RELATE MAINLY TO IMPROVING SEA TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND SURVEILLANCE AT OPEN SEAS AND ALONG THE COASTAL AREAS. THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO CONTRIBUTE GREATLY TO NAVIGATIONAL SAFETY AND THE PROTECTION OF THE SEA ENVIRONMENT. SPECIFICALLY, THE PHYSICAL OBJECT OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDES FOR SITIA VTS: • ONE (1) VTS CENTRE AT SITIA, • FIVE (5) SENSOR STATIONS [NE END OF CRETE - KAVO SIDERO AREA, SE END OF CRETE, SOUTH CRETE (IERAPETRA AREA), THE AREAS OF TSOUTSOUROS AND KALI LIMENES] • AN ESTIMATE OF FOUR (4) TRANSMITTER STATIONS. IT IS NOTED THAT AT THE OPERATIONAL CENTRE OF THE REGION OF CRETE, AS WELL AS AT IRAKLIO PORT AUTHORITY, APPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT WILL BE INSTALLED TO LINK WITH AND EXCHANGE INFORMATION WITH THE VTS CENTRE AT SITIA.
