DG EAC in Study on Volunteering in the European Union sees the sport sector as the largest voluntary activity throughout Europe. Important role of volunteering in sport was already highlighted by the EU in the Nice Declaration (2000) calling Members States to “encourage voluntary services in sport by means of measures providing appropriate protection for and acknowledging the economic and social role of volunteers, with the support, where necessary, of the Community”. Through the EVS Support, Report and Sport project, we want to focus on and tackle two challenges which are an important issue to be dealt with: lack of interest of young people in sports and lack of professional training for young people during their studies. That is why we aim to invite 12 youngsters from program countries (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Turkey and Italy) to be support staff of the happenings at international sport event hosted in Macedonia: 17th European Women’s Youth Handball Championship, organized by Macedonian Handball Federation (MHF), the national governing body of handball in Macedonia. The participants will spend 2 months (from 1 July to 31 August 2015) in Macedonia in the cities Skopje and Struga where they will get more deeply into sport journalism and multimedia and produce articles and other multimedia content that will document the course of the Championship.
The project EVS Support, Report and Sport will encompass various non-formal methods of learning (working groups, peer-to-peer learning, coaching, reflections), thus providing youngsters with an opportunity to improve their skills, which they can apply later in their professional careers, and in this way increase their employability. Furthermore, volunteering in sport contributes to active citizenship and to the integration of citizens. The promotion of this sport event through volunteers to the general public will help in promoting healthy behaviours and valuable living and in would contribute to raising the awareness about volunteering in the Programme Countries.
The selected partner organizations have broad experience with youth empowerment, whereas the participants will be active young people aged 18-30, eager to learn, progress and work on their personal and professional development. They should be familiar with the non-formal education and preferably have some background in media/journalism.
During the two weeks when the matches of the Handball Championship will be played, volunteers will start the day by gathering on a morning meeting with their coordinators, where they will together discuss and plan the activities for the upcoming day. They will decide and divide the tasks about covering games, making interviews, gathering audio and video material. The participants will be expected to support the organizers of this event, during the entire Championship. All the activities will be set according to the project’s two main objectives: to provide young people with professional training through participation in EVS and to increase interest of young people in sports. We strongly believe that the participating volunteers will through this project: improve their skills, enhance their employability and improve career prospects, increase their self-empowerment and self-esteem, enhance intercultural awareness, actively participate in society, as well as get better awareness of the European project and the EU values.
