The newly established eco-community Väike Jalajälg is situated in western part of Estonia, Märjamaa parish, 70 km from the capital. It is a growing community of 13 adults and 6 children. The main principle of the community is to "think globally, act locally"; to create a future where people`s integrity is supported and there is enough clean water, soil and air for all beings. The community aspires to become a model for holistic sustainable life and researches every day the possibilities for transforming the present state of human existence into true sustainability in social, economic, ecological and cultural aspects of life.
The community has also opened itself as seminar and experience-centre for sustainable life. Moreover it is affiliated with two social enterprises active with local food systems. Some of the members of the community are actively involved with awareness raising around sustainability on-site, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Within this larger context, the Activity of "EVS for Small Footprint"; is one of the actvities that matches the communities`s objectives of research, learning and dissemination.
One EVS participant was welcome to spend 12 months with us and study and live together with community members and other short or long term volunteers from Estonia as well as abroad. Meeting community members and other volunteers, sharing everyday life and participating in the discussion circles as a tool for showing the inner longings and processes, gives the opportunity to get to know other cultural, social and religious backgrounds which creates tolerance and supports social cohesion in the EU, as well as introspection and mutual understanding.
The program gave one volunteer the possibility to participate hands on in the building of the European Civil Society by the contact with the creation of self-sufficient/low impact living structures and enhances his skills and knowledge in both, practical and theoretical aspects. The two main working areas were sustainable food systems and seminar-management.
Small Footprint sees the project as an inspiration of sustainable development for all of Europe. The volunteers`s profile displayed a genuine interest in a life with a small ecological footprint, in non-formal education and in a peaceful life practice, community building and conflict resolution. The volunteer took the knowledge to his home country and is already multiplying the idea of sustainable community based living as a rich possibility for personal and professional growth while doing work that enhances tolerance and sustainability in different areas such as ecological, economical, social and worldview.
Within the activity the volunteer had the opportunity to design his own projects with the help and back-up of our professionals thus making him feel what ideas, initiative and taking on responsibility can bring about. He started his own craftmanship career by making different jewellery and home accessories and already sold some of his products for locals in Estonia. He also participated in two social enterprises that work in field of sustainable organic food production and distribution. So back home, entering entrepeneurship will probably be more easily accsessible for him. On an individual level, our volunteer gained knowledge in healthy lifestyle and many times was leading different meditation groups and physical activities such as yoga and dance as well as outdoor activities.
Since furthermore one main focuses of Small Footprint is on organic food production and vegetarian cooking, the participants`s awareness about a healthy nutrition was raised. One of the working areas was developing community`s training centre and it gave him broader view about the aspects in organisational work which can be very useful skill when building your own community back home.
In brief, participating in "EVS for Small Footprint", the volunteer was empowered with practical and social skills as
well as theoretical knowledge to actively become responsible citizen for a sustainable future.
