The idea to get involved in volunteer project resulted from our contact with another library. The library had had great experiences with the volunteer program, therefore we decided to join and create our own project. The volunteer will have a computer with internet access for his work. He will also have opportunity to use all documents (books, magazines, CDs etc.) and databases in our library. There will be regular meetings with volunteer. The project coordinator or other authorized people will discuss each activity with volunteer during them. There will be a space for discussing volunteer´s thoughts, problems, opinions and ideas as well. Presentations/lessons/workshops for public The volunteer would implement several presentations, lessons or workshops for our library users. These should be in English and about his mother country. The volunteer will also have a chance to cooperate on lessons for school children. There will always be a supervisor from library staff. The librarian will help volunteer and children to understand each other. Preparation of activities will be based mostly on volunteer´s individual work. He should be able to choose his own topics, find relevant information to the topic and create materials for presentation. Propagation, technical support and language interpretation will be librarian responsibility. The goal of these activities is self-improvement in an area of a work with information. The volunteer will have also opportunity to improve in communication and presentation in English language. The benefit for our library and our visitors would be to get to know the volunteer country and his culture, etc. There should be a great opportunity for everyone to compare culture differences and similarities. Exhibition The volunteer will make one or two exhibitions about his country (for example: culture, people, monuments). The topic will be chosen with regards to volunteer´s interests and our library profile. The volunteer should mostly work himself in the first phase of the exhibition. He will think through the topic, collect pieces of information and prepare proper materials. The volunteer will be helped by authorized librarians with a promotion and installation of the exhibit. The aim of the activity is to develop an awareness of a different culture. Other goals are to improve volunteer´s creativity and to get him an opportunity to a self-promotion. Engagement in common librarian´s activities The volunteer will be engaged in common librarian´s activities such as lending books to our customers and putting books and magazines in right places after users return them to our library. The volunteer will also have an opportunity of trying to help readers with finding books which they have wanted. There will be a chance for him to help with organizing events in the library, etc. The volunteer will try to use a special librarian system. The system is called Clavius. Because of Clavius librarians are able to manage lending and returning books and other documents easily. The volunteer will become familiar with those common librarian´s activities. The goal of the activity is for the volunteer to gain knowledge of the most basic librarian work. Another goal is to get to know how middle sized libraries in the Czech Republic work. Benefit The main benefit for our library will be in a fresh, external view on our library´s functioning. We expect a development of activities for children and youths. New ideas and impulses are expected as well. The main benefit for cooperating organizations (schools mainly) will be an extension of their focus range. The children will get in touch with different culture, habits and traditions. They will also have an amazing opportunity to speak with a stranger who does not speak English like a native speaker (different accent, etc.). The children will be forced to understand differences among people and will be taught to accept unfamiliar behavior and customs. The presence of the volunteer should lead to development of tolerance. We will continue doing topic focused lessons in following years after the volunteer project. Therefore we believe that the benefit of having the volunteer here in our library is going to be long-term.
